Biden pauses in the middle of his statement, making them two independent clauses. The comma was left out of any transcript I've seen of the interview. It was still a moronic thing to say, but not as moronic as it appears in print.

Trent Lott was Majority Leader and is now Minority Whip. He has repudiated nothing and votes accordingly. I have never called for his resignation from the Senate. Personally I have no problem with the Republicans putting him in a leadership position because that way people of color will know where the Republican Party stands.

A) Trent's statement was not so innocent. He was literally saying things would have been better if segregation was still around. Perhaps Lott wasn't thinking about what Strom's platform was, but that's what makes it A GAFFE.
