I suspect many of those positioning themselves to run as the GOP presidential candidate, particularly those affiliated with the Tea Party, are really positioning themselves to be the vice-presidential candidate.

to run for the Republican presidential candidate be true? Does he feel he couldn't win as a tea-party presidential candidate, and is distancing himself a little from them, but not too much mind you, since they helped him get elected.

McCain only got 29% of Hispanic vote in '08 & with perceived GOP anti-immigration policies, their % of that group is shrinking, which is disastrous, since Hispanics make up most rapidly growing demographic in the U.S..

Rubio is obviously aware of all this, which is why he's possibly "distancing" himself from the Tea Party.

As far as POTUS candidate, not in '12, for reasons others can speculate about.
