What's immoral about being a prostitute?

According to the Bible, prostitution is immoral.  Jesus just asked Christians to hate the "sin" not the sinner

I am dead serious, I do have a strong belief in god, however I am in the sex industry, so I guess I am a contradiction.

believe in the religious teaching more than the spiritual importance of a belief in a higher power.

I am no longer a Christian (I am now an Odinist) but was formerly a Baptist minister (many moons ago). Let me give you the thumbnail sketch.

You have asked an honest question and I'll give you an honest answer though it will undoubtedly offend many. Please understand these are not MY views, but the views of the Baptist faith. They are applicable to Christians only. If you are NOT a Christian, don't get all offended. If you ARE a Christian, open up the book that is the infallible inspired word of God, and complain to Him and not me if you don't like what I am saying.

Hold on while I dust off the Christian minister hat and adopt the persona .... okay, here you go ... ahem!

If you say you are a Christian, then I presume that you have accepted Jesus as the Son of the One and Only Living God, and accepted Him into your life as your personal Savior.

If you have come to Jesus, then Jesus was clear:
"Whosoever cometh unto me, I will in no wise cast out." Once you are saved, you are ALWAYS saved.

However, your relationship with Jesus is not a one-way-street. You don't just pray and He saves you. Whether or not you are truly saved, truly accepted Him; is manifested in your life, behaviors and choices.

To be a Christian means to live your life in, as nearly as possible, a Christ-like manner. While deeds alone cannot get you to heaven your deeds demonstrate the truthfulness of your profession of faith and acceptance of Jesus.

That is not to say that one cannot sin and still be a Christian. That is, after all, why the Lamb of God gave his life: to atone for those Sins. "All have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God." His blood washes away your sins so that you can be acceptable in the eyes of God.

Prostitution is simply a form of fornication. Fornication (engaging in sex with anyone to whom you are not married) is, in and of itself, sinful.

Nobody will be perfect. But to deliberately CHOOSE an occupation that REQUIRES flagrant sinning, when other means of support ARE available; speaks of a person who is alienated from her faith and walking away from Jesus rather than walking with Him.

This means that the validity of your profession of faith -- whether you were saved at all to start with -- is in doubt. Prostitution isn't like stubbing your toe and accidentally taking the Lord's name in vain or stealing an apple to save a starving child. It is a deliberate act of Sin -- again and again and again.

Therefore, from a Christian perspective, if you truly are a Christian, you should try to find some other means of self support that does not require Sin as as an absolute prerequisite to survival. If you absolutely MUST do it, then you must. God is just. But be honest with yourself about this, because He knows what is in your heart even better than you.

Your soul is not irrevocably doomed to hell, but you are walking out of Fellowship with the Lord and it is therefore in jeopardy.

End of sermon, I will now take off my Christian minister hat and persona, and resume my current belief system.

I wish you well, I know these things can be a giant struggle.

who colored outside the lines lol

If they were "good enough" to be Jesus progenitors,

they oughta be respected hy Christians

though I can't say, because that's not my bag

In Jesus' day women were not allowed to work. If they were not married, this presented a serious obsticle in their effort to stay alive. As a result many were prostitues...my Babtist minister told me this btw
In this situation Jesus did not hold it against them and I dont think God does either.
Escorting is an evolved form of prostitution. A true professional upscale escort provides a whole lot more that sex as we all know.
I think God will take this into account.

It would seem to me that there are many things that would be hard to reconcile with Christianity. Prostitution would be one of them, homosexuality would be another.

The Bible speaks out strongly against both of them, but many prostitutes, many gays, not to mention the countless number of robbers, murderers etc claim to be devout Christians. None of this makes a bit of sense to me, but WTF do I know? The whole fairy tale itself makes no sense to me either.

My point is, if you are going to live your life according to what was written thousands of years ago by someone whose education wouldn't get past the first grade by today's standards, you need to buy the whole story. You can't just pick and choose which parts you are going to believe.

I was raised with the indoctrination into the christian faith.  I too came to question the wisdom of following the writings of a group of ancient people, as translated by another group, and as interpretted by yet another group of self-interested people.

But, I do have to say this, there is one part of the christian faith that I have cherry picked for my own use.

Treat others as you would like to be treated.

It seems to me, if the bible consisted of this one, revolutionary sentence, repeated over and over again, that I could then call myself a christian.  As it is now?  No way.

Since I, like you are not  "believers" I believe that we are entitled to pick and choose what part of the Bible, the Koran, or Dianetics for that matter we want to agree with. That same option doesn't apply to people who seek the churches blessing for everything they do.

Personally, I believe you can adhere to whatever faith of your choice. Having committed to both your faith and your chosen profession, you are also committed to whatever the consequences are for your actions.

Now PROFESSIONALLY is a whole other story.

There was a provider in Houston who openly quoted biblical verse in her ads, asked for ancient bible copies as gifts and was even knows to have verses from the book of Job scrawled on her walls. Another is know to display erotic images in her incall right alongside crucifixes, catholic symbols and images of Christ.

I'm not sure how they do it. I would think a hobbyists would find the setting uncomfortable.. unnerving even.

But they both do (did).. and neither seemed to suffer for it.

It's an interesting subject. Thanks for posting it.

I hate to comment on orthodoxies of the beliefs of others, but there is no conflict between being a prostitute and being a Christian.

As I understand it, Christian theology holds that people are subject to the weaknesses of the flesh - sins, if you will.  Thus, you can believe and not live the perfect life.

Indeed, Mother Teressa had doubts, although that was wrongly interpretted by the media.  Jesus also had doubts, which was why he asked why God had foresaken him.

Christians believe people can be of the faith and still stray in daily life. After all, most of the adherents are not saints, but regular people.

If there are any Christians here and I did not correctly state the theology, I am sorry. This is just my understanding.

Hi dncphil,

Prostitution is not an occasional unintentional lapse in to sin; which, as you acknowledge, is expected in Christianity.

Rather, prostitution is a deliberate, contemplated and repeated lapse. That's not the same thing.

To be in a hurry one day and be inattentive and run someone over -- that's a lapse. You can do that and still be a good Christian. Maybe you can get angry, deck your boss, and accidentally kill him.

But you can't systematically murder 20 million Ukrainians and still be a good Christian.

The issue with Christianity and prostitution is its repeated and premeditated nature; which speaks to a lack of actual belief in the first place.

I think you have summed it up rather well.

It's not my belief system and I don't see a thing wrong with prostitution, but then again I am not a Christian.

Your own private little hell called Costa Rica. Don't forget the suncreen, LOL.

Gosh. I don't know, but I think we might be able to detect a little difference between turning tricks, albiet every day, and murdering 20,000,000 Ukranians.  Let's see - nookie versus ,mass murder.  Yes, I would say they are different. Even if the nookie is more than "occasional."

My understanding is Christianity forgives more than an "inattentive" accident when you are in a hurry, your scenario.  I think you can be forgiven for venial sins.

Actually, I think, but an not sure, even the "mortal" sins can be forgiven, and they are the most serious.

Of course, killing 20 million people is a little sui generis. Not quite turning tricks.

Sorry ladies. You don't rank up there with Smokin' Joe Stalin.

There are many instances where God used Prostitutes to accomplish his purpose.  Some where mentioned in responses to your original post. There was a prophet who was commanded by God to marry a Prostitute.

The key is to realize that God forgives sin and that you have to be willing to change.

Jeremiah 3:14

"Turn, O backsliding children, saith the LORD; for I am married unto you: and I will take you one of a city, and two of a family, and I will bring you to Zion"

When you get a chance take some time and read the whole chapter of Proverbs 5.

Proverbs 5:3
"For the lips of a strange woman drop as an honeycomb, and her mouth is smoother than oil: "

Proverbs 5:20
"And why wilt thou, my son, be ravished with a strange woman, and embrace the bosom of a stranger?"

Proverbs 6:24
"To keep thee from the evil woman, from the flattery of the tongue of a strange woman."

Proverbs 7:5
"That they may keep thee from the strange woman, from the stranger which flattereth with her words. "

Proverbs 22:14
"The mouth of strange women is a deep pit: he that is abhorred of the LORD shall fall therein."

Proverbs 23:27
"For a whore is a deep ditch; and a strange woman is a narrow pit."

Proverbs 23:33
"Thine eyes shall behold strange women, and thine heart shall utter perverse things."
