I disagree Snow. I think there's been plenty of studies done that shows that the death penalty does not act as a deterant for people who are committing crimes. The simple reality is that crazy people do crazy things, especially in the heat of the moment. Often they don't have the wherewithall to think rationally enough about consequences at all. If they could, then they wouldn't commit the crime in the first place.

...how many people do you think have been killed during the "heat of the moment"? Say some woman comes home and finds her hubby in bed with a provider. She pulls a gun and kills them both. If she had any ability at that moment to think rationally, she would have thought, "I'm going to get all of his stuff when the divorce happens". Instead she ends up on death row. People aren't thinking rationally to begin with when they're committing a serious crime. So why in the hell would executing more people fix this?

Look at the state of Texas. They do have a real death penalty. They execute more people than any other government not only in the United States, but in the Western Hemisphere. Guess what? Texas still has one of the highest murder rates in the country.

The capitalist class cannot be trusted to properly use the death penalty. Society ends up executing innocent citizens.

those "studies" you cite are based on our current death penalty laws. Everyone knows that if you kill someone, the state will take 15-20 years to execute you.

I feel confident in saying your studies would be differnt if we actually had a real death penalty in this country.

Give me fucking break. I get drunk all the time, and I "always" have at least one loaded firearm within reach, I don't carry a firearm while clubbing, but I always have one in the car. I have never had the slightest urge, not once in my entire life to misuse a firearm simply because I was drunk.

I suspect that what you consider "drunk" is not what he is talking about. I've known heavy drinkers that can drive a car without a hitch after consuming the same amount of alcohol that makes me unable to walk. You are describing intoxication where your mental abilities are not yet impaired.

     By definition, when you drink so much that your physical and mental abilities become impaired, you have got no business having a firearm in reach, even if you have unblemished record of firearm safety. It is not a question of urges and intent but of actual mental impairment.

And usually it's homebrew wine when I do. As a general rule, I avoid making any decision that could be even remotely important when I'm not sober. I don't spend money. I don't get behind the wheel. And I don't handle my guns.

I might be on the other extreme, I often find it necessary to do business while "under the influence". It really is true that some people want to see how you act when inebriated before entrusting you with millions of dollars. I don't know if its a fair test, but I do know it happens, and in my world it happens quite often.

For discussion sake, let's say that the SCOTUS, at a future date rules that the individual ownership and possession of ALL types of firearms is forbidden. The Second Amendment goes out the window. Law enforcement and the military are the only ones authorized to be armed, and then only while actually performing their duties. My question is, what happens in our society then? Is violent crime eliminated, or even drastically reduced? Or do we become like the UK, Canada, and Australia, where crime against private citizens has increased because they can no longer defend themselves, and the criminals know this, and use it to full advantage?
