The building has been literally crumbling for years since it closed down. It went down in a heap this morning.
The mayor of Atlantic City had offered to have people bid for the chance to ceremoniously push the detonation button for charity, but Carl Ichan, the billionaire who bought it after Stump's bankruptcy of the casino (and a Stump supporter), nixed it on the grounds of safety. He did use his own money to cover bids that were previously made. The link includes a video of the implosion.
He can't win for losing. The end of another in his LONG line of business failures. It will be even more fun watching his House of Cards, er, Business Empire collapse in another mountain of debt.
The Fontainbleau was never finished. The Trump Plaza is dated and shopworn, not worth the cost of refurbishment. The corporate raider, Carl Icahn, bought it out of bankruptcy and then flipped it a few years later for nearly a $450,000,000 profit to the current owners, who are finishing the construction and will open it as the Drew hotel.
You can't compare a partially completed building that has never been used and has no wear and tear to the beat-up Trump Plaza. Trump Plaza was more like the Dunes, the Aladdin, the Landmark and the Sahara, which had all seen better days and were imploded fairly quickly after they were vacated.
