I watched the debate on CNN.  They had a second by second audience reaction ticker.  It was very interesting to watch.  You could see how repubs, dems and indys felt as every sentence was uttered.

Does anyone know how they did it?

The different voters have  a dial in front of them and they move it according to the reaction they get from that part of the debate .
That guy on Fox ,Howard somebody showed how it was done one time.

What was funny on CNN was Henry Kissinger calling in saying Obama was wrong  saying what he said after the debate :)
