Sorry. The irony of you accusing an entire state of being "backwards" is funny as hell.
I lived there 30 something yrs before moving to ATL, and the reasons are many, but to sum it up, it IS backwards. This is coming from a conservative/libertarian white gal.
Not "backwards" so much in the way of dislike of minorities, but backwards in the sense of a state that, while it claims to be the "rebellious south", it gives kudos to any politician that wants to tell us how to live our personal lives.
I remember some self appointed religious kooks trying to hijack the city council board in Greenville, SC one year in efforts to tell them who they could allow to play the BiLO center!
The idea that these idiots who don't like Rob Zombie don't have to attend his concerts, never crossed their minds. While the roads had potholes the sizes of car in them, we had politicians worried about the legalization of tattoing shops. I can't tell you how many times I've called the police on wife abusing assholes just to have the police do NOTHING, 5 times or more, even when evidence was apparent. The legislature was going to ban body piercing, but realized ear piercing would be banned as well, so dropped it. That's the only reason it remained legal. The lottery also faced the ire of religious morons, but alas was finally instituted as well. Something that never passed but was brought to the plate was a bill that would require DNA from anyone accused of a crime. ANY CRIME. Accused, I said...not convicted. and the crime could be shoplifting or jaywalking. Your DNA would have been placed in a database forever and God knows what it would be used for.
Back in the early 90's, a hospital in Charleston was drug testing pregnant women on welfare unbeknowest to them, for the sheer purpose of incarcerating them. Women were dragged off the birthing tables bleeding, handcuffed and taken to jail. If you all doubt me, look up Furgeson VS City of Charleston.
Basically...in SC, if you beat your wife, it's a "private matter" but if you want a tattoo, a nipple piercing or want to gamble it's EVERYONE's business. and never mind those huge potholes in the road, the gov't job is to control your BODY! Aside from all this, the "small minds" moniker fits, you know, people afraid to leave their front porch because something might "git 'em".What on earth would they do if they actually had to face the rest of the big world out there? Men would rarely date me because I (gasp) actually had my own thoughts and ideas and wanted to do something that didn't involve picking up his dirty socks the rest of my life.
I am sorry...but I had to agree..SC IS backwards. I know it has moved forward in some aspects, but generally...it's as I described.
Remember...SC was the last to join the Union. That should tell ya something. LOL
nor is there a lack of well educated folks there. And as I posted, they are NOT ranked at the bottom of the "smart list" while Vermont is ranked at the top... and I lived in Vermont as well...
and let me tell you, every day, I passed a house - with plastic covering the walls to ward off the cold - and in that house there were small kids.. under 5 years of age... and their parentage was kinda blurred - their brother might have been their dad... and that was one of many like that in Vermont... sadly that is a state where heating costs are stright through the ceiling... and the COL is sky high... but you go right ahead and think that SC is backwards, after all - you now live in the state that gave us the "peanut farmer president!" yea, right.
Well, if you read my post correctly, I said it HAS came forward in some aspects. But what I really mean is....the people of SC aren't generally the religious backwards types...but the politicians catered to THAT minority.
It didn't matter what most South Carolinians wanted.....it's what the "Moral Majority" wanted.
If you noticed, most of my post was attacking the legislature of SC, not the ppl themselves.
But I stick by my assessment, in general.
really pretty southern belle types, well bread, fine bone structure, polite and cultured. All y'all and bless your heart. Up in the hill country you might think you were in West ByGod Virginia but the lowlands produces some really fine pussy. Charleston is a great place for pussy. Met a lady there a few years back, took her to Poogans Porch for dinner, then a walk on the battery in the moonlight. She had on a long dress, a floppy hat and was carrying a fan. Something like out of the goddamn antebellum days. Hot little piece of ass too......
shhh you might get too many replies flaming you. I haven't read any replies against my similar posts, knowing they'll just be the usual hating right-wingers. I did see the subject lines of the losers who replied to me, its clear there's a a lot of hate here, and all I was doing was expressing Joy!
My post here will most likely be replied to by these haters, LOL, because hate drives the right-wing communique, but I won't be reading any threads, they just lie and express their hate for liberals and Obama. I am just backing up ATLHunter, your defense about SC being "backwards". End, and have a great day! I will! 10 hours and counting...
As in, a nice place "to be from". I left the city I was raised in, and although it has positives, I don't call it home.
I'm not typically a fan of the south. It seems that too much of it is religiously motivated for me. Granted, as an atheist, my tolerance is pretty low.
I think that if you read that thread again, most people weren't debating the merits of SC, but rather the OP's perception of being in danger for supporting Obama. My personal SC experience is limited to about a week, almost 30 years ago. It was pretty backwards then. Can't say if it's changed since, but it seemed to have a long way to go.
Sorry. The irony of you accusing an entire state of being "backwards" is funny as hell.
