Besides the fact that he barely escaped indictment, there's another issue. The Republicans will control the House with a tiny majority and so far Trump has eroded it by three members he's appointed to his Administration. So while these are also safe Republican seats it will take time to hold a new election. Meanwhile, Mike Johnson will have an even harder time getting anything done.

Gaetz has now resigned from Congress so the investigation report that was about to be released now dies. Lots of Republicans have expressed dismay, so this seems more like a way to bury the report, have Gaetz then remove himself from the nomination for AG and take some other job. So, just an elaborate effort at ass covering as payback by Trump for Gaetz' support.

let's say your analysis is correct.  After that, so what?  Every President is entitled to have the staff he wants, and any Republican that goes against Trump after he dragged enough Senators and Representatives across the finish line in order to get the trifecta, will become the scapegoat for anything that goes wrong in the Trump administration.

nominees wait until they're confirmed before resigning.  The House Ethics Committee was scheduled to vote on the "highly damaging" report on Gaetz.  Now the report won't be released.

Also, Gaetz resigned from the CURRENT Congress.  He was just re-elected to the next Congress.  It's possible he won't accept the AG position and then go back to Congress without the Ethics Committee report hanging over his head like the sword of Damocles.

I don't know the rules on investigations and reports and such. IF Gaetz accepts the AG offer and gets questioned by the Senate, will the Senate be entitled to "subpoena" (or whatever the Senate-from-the-House procedure is) records or even just testimony? ... re-interview the witnesses as part of the Senate process on Gaetz?

Also, I thought that Gaetz resigned EARLY in order to give DeSantis the ability to appoint a replacement to be seated on Jan 3. So the Gaetz seat is filled with another Rep until FL can elect a replacement to replace the appointed replacement.

Gaetz is being investigated by the house for seeing an underage prostitute. This is deflection. Gaetz has his own mini Epstein named Joel Greenberg, who plead guilty to paying underage girls for sex and is serving 11 years. He resigned from Congress because they were investigating him and were about to release a report on their investigation. However, since he resigned Congress has no authority over him and the investigation must end immediately. He is there to run interference on investigations and also to end the investigation into him. You Trumpers are so credulous, you would eat shit out of his hand if he called it filet mignon.

the girl's testimony not credible because she kept changing her story of how it went down.  No other witnesses, so it's he said, she said.  He's a US Congressman, she claims to have been a prostitute at the time.  The DOJ refused to bring charges in late 2023 and now that he has been named a nominee for AG, it's suddenly relevant???  The administrative state is shitting their collective pants over the possibility that Gaetz will expose their corruption and illegal acts under the color of law.   That's all we need to know to decide putting him in this job is a good idea.

If Gaetz has no problem with this, why did he resign the day before the report was to be released? Because he knew it would look terrible for him and he hoped to quash it by resigning. And remember, this guy's problem is not the Dems. He is hated by almost the entire House Republican caucus.
The only question is how bad does it get? Did he tell Trump what was happening in order to have Trump bail him out? Is it even possible for him to be confirmed when several Republican Senators have expressed doubts? These include Sen. Cornyn who was nearly elected Majority Leader. From the Times:
"Senator John Cornyn, Republican of Texas, told reporters that he “wants to see everything” when considering nominees, including the Ethics Committee report. He suggested the Senate Judiciary Committee could subpoena the report on Mr. Gaetz if the House committee refuses to hand it over, and he would be open to such action."
The Reps will only have a 53-seat majority and already several Rep. Senators have said they have concerns. According to Forbes: "At least five Republican senators have expressed doubts about Gaetz, including Sens. Susan Collins, R-Maine, Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, Thom Tillis, R-N.C., Max Miller, R-Ohio, and Joni Ernst, R-Iowa, Politico reported, with Murkowski stating “I don’t think it’s a serious nomination for the attorney general,” and Miller calling it a “reckless pick” that has “zero shot of getting through the Senate.” None have said how they would vote but this ain't a good start.

And some of the Republican block him, Trump will have a ready-made list of which GOP Senators are part of the swamp.  Trump has pledged to clean up the Capital, and that is what voters expect him to do.  It would be interesting if he got enough votes from Dems to get in anyway.  I could see some Dems doing this to cause chaos within the Republican majority.
