Biden still not on ballot in Ohio

Ohio law requires candidates to be officially selected 90 days before election.  DNC convention is 12 days after the deadline.  At this point Biden is not going to be on the Ohio ballot unless they move the convention earlier.
.
This is also true, apparently in Alabama and Washington, though Washington has already compromised.

The Ohio Sec of State has been pleading with the Democrat party of Ohio to fix this, saying he wants to give Ohioans a choice in the election, but he’s duty bound to follow the law. Despite weeks of telling them of the issue they’ve done squat.

Yes, How Could the Ohio Rep Legislature Be So Incompentent?
.
This "quirk" of the Ohio balloting issue has come up before and is routinely and easily fixed by the Ohio legislature. In 2012 the Dem controlled legislature passed a bill shortening the notification time (from 90+ days to 70-something days) in order to allow Romney to appear on the ballot. In 2020, the Dem controlled legislature passed another such bill allowing Trump to appear on the Ohio ballot.
.
This year, 2024, the Rep controlled Ohio legislature REFUSED to consider such legislation to allow Biden (or whoever the Dems select as their candidate) to appear on the ballot if not submitted at least 90 days before election day.
.
Rep Gov De Wine has since called for a special session of the legislature in order to pass the usual and customary exception.

Ohio lawmakers urged to add Biden to November ballot
.
"... Governor Mike DeWine, a moderate Republican who has distanced himself from the party's Trump-friendly wing, on Thursday said he was recalling state lawmakers to fix the "ridiculous... absurd situation". “Ohio is running out of time to get Joe Biden, the sitting President of the United States, on the ballot this fall," he told reporters. "Failing to do so is simply unacceptable."
.
"Party conventions, both Democrat and Republican, typically are held in the summer before a presidential contest - and similar issues with certification deadlines are rectified with little drama. Earlier this year, Democrats in Washington state and Republicans in Alabama made provisional changes necessary to exempt Mr Biden from ballot deadlines.
Ohio itself has done the same in the past, with its Legislature making exceptions for Mitt Romney, the Republican presidential nominee in 2012, and Mr Trump in 2020.
.
"*****But the state's Republican House speaker said the body would not make a legislative fix to the issue.***** "There's just not the will do that from the Legislature," Speaker Jason Stephens told reporters on Tuesday.
.
"The Biden campaign is continuing to express confidence the issue will be resolved without drama. “Joe Biden will be on the ballot in all 50 states,” Charles Lutvak, a campaign spokesperson, told US media. “Election after election, states across the country have acted in line with the bipartisan consensus and taken the necessary steps to ensure the presidential nominees from both parties will be on the ballot.” But with a legislative remedy by state Republicans off the table, the sitting US president may have to seek legal action. ..."

The "fix" that the Rep Sec of State wanted was for the Dems to CHANGE THE DATE of the Dem National Convention to meet the 90-day requirement rather than pass a bill approving the exception as has been many times before in many states. Yeah, it's the Dem's fault.
.
Republican hypocrites.

1) the 90 day requirement was put into place by Democrats in Ohio.

2) the DNC convention was scheduled by Democrats.

3) the GOP has warned Democrats for weeks that this will be a problem and done nothing to resolve the issue

4) Democrats repeatedly tried to use extra legal means to keep Trump off the ballot in several states.

5) the Ohio Sec of State is duty bound to follow the law.

The 90 day requirement has been on the books for at least 12 years. Who (Dems or Reps) pushed it through and when (2012? 2010? 1998? 1980? ...)?
.
In 2012 and 2020, the Dem controlled legislature approved a simple exception to the 90-day rule to allow Romney and then Trump to get on the ballot with only 70-something days notification.
.
A warning of a few "weeks" in April or May of 2024 makes zero sense when there is a long-standing policy to override the 90-day rule by a simple legislative process. (The 90-day rule still applies to state and local candidates.)
.
Dems used LEGAL MEANS to approve exceptions for Romney in 2012 and Trump in 2020. The current Rep legislature can do the same so that the Ohio Sec of State can LEGALLY put the Dem nominee on the ballot.

What was the point of the democrats making it 90 days and then making exceptions every election?  That sounds fucked up. But yeah it's everybody elses fault.

WHO (Dems or Reps) made the 90-day rule and when? I have not found any report on that. It appears that it was intended primarily for candidates for local and state offices. (Similar rules (90 days; 80 days; ... 20 days ...) in other places are intended to keep candidates from swooping in at the last minute to get on a ballot either to try to get elected OR to create chaos and screw up the election and split the votes for authentic candidates.)
.
There is a simple fix: pass the usual and customary exception to the 90-day rule.

How many times have I told the lefties on this board? There’s consequences for your actions. The Dems spent half the year trying to keep Trump off the ballot in several states. They’ve been endlessly prosecuting him for obviously political reasons. This is way outside the bounds of what’s considered normal party competition in a Presidential election. There are rules. One of those rules is you don’t try to dream up legal excuses to keep a candidate off the ballot. The Dems did this over and over again. It took the Supreme Court to step in and put a stop to it. Now you want the Ohio GOP to lift a finger to offer Biden a courtesy that the Dems were not willing to offer to the Republicans. Particularly when the courtesy is needed because of nothing but a series of Democrat screw ups.

Why should any Ohio Republican be willing to offer the Dems this courtesy? Why?

I'm not sure. I seem to recall just be on enough state ballots so you have a chance at 270 electoral votes.
