Just wondering

I was reading a review of the most recent West Wing, which I did not see, where the 2 presidential candidates abandoned the rules for their televised debate and let fly.  Imagine, letting the American people get to know the people who would be president, to see how they think and speak on their feet, to see how they resolve very difficult issues.

My immediate thought to this was powerlessness - this will not happen, regardless of how sensible it is.  So we had two guys in Bush and whats-his-name in '04, neither of whom come close to being what we need in America, each being handled and postured and marketed.  It's just bullshit piled upon bullshit piled upon bullshit.  Utter insanity.

So now we have Bush, and the status of his presidency wasn't hard to see coming. He got lucky in the 1st term with 9/11.  Without it Walter Mondale could have beaten him running on  his record as being a former tank commander.

And then I thought how empowering it would be to have a "none of the above" - another wet dream.  Imagine the shakeup if we could tell the parties, "thanks, but no thanks. Try again."

This is the most dangerous time in all of humanity's history, and America is the most dangerous country ever - I guess it's always the best of times and the worst of times.  And our very political process is so injured that getting people of deep wisdom, penetrating intellect who lead from clear moral vision is as unlikely as me doing a regular threesome with our most pricey ladies.

Crap, I need to stay off this board.  Every time I think about these things I just get depressed.  George Bush, President.  You've got to be kidding me.

Most television dramas play with the question "what if?" NBC's "West Wing" revels in "if only...." Sunday's live presidential debate was the quintessence of wishful writing. Two intelligent, principled candidates tossed aside debate rules and went at each other full throttle on live television, debating everything from immigration and energy policy to foreign debt relief.
