A serious Q about jury selection for Trump's trials. Obviously, this doesn't apply to jury selection for a non-political trial (a mundane murder, a random robbery, a humdrum heist, a dull DUI, prosaic prostitution, vapid vandalism, ...).
.
In the NY trial, the judge asked all the questions and made the final jury selection. He kept the jurors anonymous in order to protect them from possible social media or physical attacks. In the upcoming trials, will the judge or, if allowed, prosecutors and defense lawyers, be allowed to ask potential jurors if they made donations to the campaigns or PACs of Trump, Biden (and maybe Clinton)? On the assumption that people sometimes make a mistake, misremember, or flat out lie, will the court be able to search donor lists?
.
I think that campaigns have to track and report donations so there is no big deal about obtaining such info. Do PACs have to report donors to the FEC? Would it be constitutional to get a court order to search PAC donor lists? Instead of providing the entire donor list, would it be legal to ask the PAC to do a search for members of the jury pool only (20 - 50 names, per batch)?
.
Do you think that donor status (Y/N) is relevant? Would the AMOUNT donated be relevant to a juror's level of commitment or bias? Absolute amount or amount as a percentage of income? Do you think additional info about the donor is needed? ("I thought I donated $50 but they kept billing my CC without my knowledge!" could be bad for Trump.)
.
Just wondering.
