Curious what kind of support these candidates would garner here at the P&R Forum. I think the conservative guys here would be happy with any of the GOP top 3, but I’m leaning towards Rubio or DeSantis.

For the liberals here, I’m guessing support will be spread out. BigP likely supports Harris while I see Happy going with Newsom. Nicky? Out of the top four I think he would pick Mayor Pete, but probably would prefer Beshear or Shapiro. I think Jazzy goes with whoever he thinks having the best chance to defeat the GOP candidate. Beshear? Newsome? Ed probably wants to go with a governor, so his choice falls between Shapiro, Newsom, or Beshear. Now who Katie would support?  No clue.

that being a crusader and supporting an outside that has little chance of winning amounted to wasting my vote, but it's an epiphany I had to realize on my own, so I applaud you for having the courage to stick to your guns under such circumstances.  It shows integrity and an unwillingness to compromise your principles in the face of a stark reality.

And I have a feeling trump will endorse and push Ivanka to run...my feeling
Trump doesn't like any of those candidate you mentioned...Vance is quietly against the war and he's VP because Thiel and Don Jr pushed Vance on trump for the Money. Look at way he's being jerked around with the negotiating of this war. It isn't by accident
Trump never forgave Rubio for his "little hands " remark...don't think for a second he forgot that. He despises Rubio and clowns him when he can
And DeSantis was his enemy during the 2024 campaigner...trump hold grudges
Trump want to keep in the the family.

Because CDL is on the record as favoring slavery. Just ask BP.  He's so old he was actually around during the Civil War.

You raised a really interesting question, and it is one I will probably keep thinking about: should the Union have just let the Confederacy secede? On one hand, the North had major advantages. It had more industry, more money, more transportation networks, and a stronger economic base. The Confederacy may have eventually collapsed on its own because its economy was so dependent on slavery and plantation agriculture.

But the problem is that “eventually” may not have been fast enough. If the Confederacy had survived even for a while, slavery could have continued much longer, and the United States might have had a slaveholding nation right next door. That would have created a completely different future for Black people (Me) in America.

I also think about Haiti in this conversation. If enslaved people had been left with no other path to freedom, the South may have faced a much larger rebellion or revolution. The Civil War was horrific, but slavery itself was already a war against Black people.

I wish Reconstruction had been protected and allowed to succeed. After Lincoln was assassinated, Andrew Johnson’s leadership helped weaken Reconstruction, and the country abandoned many of the promises made to formerly enslaved people. In some ways, it feels like America is still trying to deal with the unfinished business of Reconstruction in 2026.

Since we're trading States etc... How am I gonna make this into a podcast today?

First, there's no evidence slavery would have simply petered out without a war. The South existed on revenues from the sale of cotton, mainly to England.  Before the invention of the cotton gin in 1794 the production of cotton was inefficient. But once it was introduced as a quick and cheap was to remove seeds from cotton, profits rose and slavery became an effective way to operate.
As for Reconstruction it actually DID continue under Andrew Johnson and even U.S. Grant. It did not end until 1877 when Pres. Hayes agreed to end it as part of a compromise resulting from the contested election of 1876.
But there is no doubt you are correct we are still dealing with "the unfinished business of Reconstruction." And, in fact, we are still dealing with the unfinished business of "the 3/5ths compromise" in the Constitutional Convention in 1787. That was the proverbial "deal with the devil" the Founding Fathers (many of them slaveholders) made, which was the price of the creation of the United States.

It doesn't matter. I don't think I can make this into a bit. JUST the chance that slavery would still be going on bothers me.

So why does Johnson get so much hate? How did Hayes avoid it?

Look, I'm just grateful to be 3/5ths of a citizen. (Obvi, kidding.) BUT Did you watch the Birthright Citizen "show"? When the lawyer said he would question Native American babies that were heading back to the reservation, I was done! I think I literally snorted out some coffee! "I never thought of that".

he wasn't Lincoln. He did not support Reconstruction as diligently as Lincoln probably would have and was generally weak. Hayes avoided it because Reconstruction at that point had been going on for more than ten years and people were just tired of it. Tired of fighting the Southern States relentless efforts to battle to regain control of their state governments. In effect, the South lost the war but won the peace.

We can add JB to the list. I don’t think any other P&R libs will be joining you in that support though.

Ivanka for President? I think her interest in politics is minimal.

Ivanka’s personal net worth has been estimated between $100M-$300M. A good portion of that comes from product lines that are made in China.

Sources of Wealth: Her wealth originated from her career as a fashion model, her roles as an executive vice president at The Trump Organization, her personal brand ventures (clothing, jewelry, shoes), and income from the Ivanka M. Trump Business Trust.
Ivanka and Jared’s combined net worth is pegged at over $1B.

Quite a few Union and Confederate leaders were not willing to split a case of whiskey with anybody, during or after the Civil War.
