is lethal to a range of 600 yards? So those 30 bullets that your neighbor fires from her town house in Adams Morgan at the pizza delivery man whom she thinks is a burglar are going to make it all the way to Constitution Avenue and take out some of the tourists during Cherry Blossom season (which may not be a crime the way these guys congest traffic).
And these same bullets go right through wood frame houses and cars. Up the calibre and I imagine overpenetration increases.
So regardless of whether a shotgun is the home defense weapon of choice, do you really disagree with the VP that the AR 15 is a poor choice bc of the risk it poses to others in your neighborhood?
For a lot of ladies the shotgun would be better. I do suggest a 20 gauge tho. I did notice that not one of the girls in the video were in a good shooting stance which tells me that either the guy with her is an idiot/a-hole for not teaching her or he just wanted to see somebody get knocked on their ass. And why anybody with an ounce of firearms experience and common sense would put a stockless shotgun in the hands of any gun newbie is simply beyond me. And I'm just getting started.....
A shot gun is just as bad in urban areas. Your shot expands over 100yrds and can easily hurt people standing behind your target, 00buck shot could easily kill 4 or 5 people esp if you used a double barrel and pulled both triggers. Dont think that a shot gun is the perfect answer one size fits all answer to home defense. Understanding your target and whats beyond it is the first thing you should learn about firearm safety. Understanding your gun and round is also important. I wouldnt use an AR to defend my home, but that doesnt not remove my right to have one under the current laws. Everyone is so scared of the AR... handguns are much deadlier, easier to conceal, carry, you can carry more ammo, target acquisition is faster, you could shoot with both hands if you're practiced... The AR is the most effective weapon against the US military and police and thats why they want it gone.

All standard rifle rounds are designed to travel long distances. They have more powder behind them, so the bullets fly faster and longer distances. This is very important if you're hunting deer who aren't prone to walking right up to you. A .223 Remington round is one of hte smallest rifle calibers, so it travels a shorter distance than others before it hits the ground.
Shotgun shells are good if you have a shit aim. It sprays tiny pellets all over the place, which is handy in self defense, but not useful if you're worried about harming others are who close by.
These are the kind of things that gun owners have to consider when it comes to personal defense. Guns are not a one-size-fits-all sort of thing. What works for one person's particular situation, won't work for another's. I don't own a shotgun, because if I need it to protect myself, I don't want to take out my cats in the process.
In an urban setting, a handgun is far better. The rounds travel a much shorter distance. To prevent a round from going through your attacker and injuring others, people will carry what's sometimes called "defensive rounds", or what's more commonly known as hollow points.
Hollow points will break open and the bullet will flaten after fired. A wide flat round will not have enough momentum to go through a human being, but it will make a bigger impact, stopping an attacker faster.
So it all depends on your own personal situation. This is why gun control laws are so maddening. It allows politicians who don't know jack squat about guns, much less ballistics, to decide how you are to defend yourself, when they have no way of knowing what would work best for your particular situation.
Since I live in the 'burbs, a handgun is what I've determined to be best for me. If I lived out on a farm, I would probably choose a shotgun. If I were being attacked by multiple people I'd use an AR-15.

That video serves to illustrate that there are quite a few unsafe, moronic and irresponsible gun owners out there.
I would never do that to anybody. So many things can go wrong in the blink of an eye.
Absolute fools. As a responsible gun owner, I believe those who would willingly allow such a potentially dangerous and unnecessary event to occur ought to have their right to bear arms taken away from them because they've clealy demonstrated they are not to be trusted with firearms.
I once had something similar happen to me when I rented a FN Herstal 5.7 at a range. I was plinking at metal plates at about 15 yards, and the damn round ricocheted and landed about a foot away from me. I said, "fuck this" and never fired a 5.7 again.
