I think obama should also have taken Abe to the USS Missouri. It’s only a half mile from the USS Arizona  on Ford Island.

 
Would gifting Abe a portrait of MacArthur after a tour of the Missouri be a bit much

Little did anyone realize at the time how influential carriers would become and in short order too.

Still the Japs were not happy that they were out at sea. And some at the Memorial espouse the conspiracy theory.  

Maybe Mein will chime in on it. lol

How come they massed all their fleet carriers to attack Pearl?  They had learned the lesson of Taranto.
Also, by cancelling their third wave they failed to hit the fuel dumps at Pearl.  Combined with missing the carriers, it sealed their fate.
Pearl Harbor was not the great success most think it was.

Its success is mostly based on the fact that the Jap task force reached its destination...

...without detection, not based as much on the damage done which, while significant, was not determinative in the Pacific theatre.

In addition to not taking out the fuel, as you state, with the lack of a third wave, the Japs failed to destroy the dry docks, which would have caused us to drag the damaged ships all the way to the U.S. west coast, obviously adding greatly to their repair time.

They were obsessed with taking out the battle ships and that obsession cost them dearly with other high value targets that went unscathed
