I've been upgraded quite a number of times, never paid for 1st class. I know first hand what a bunch of self righteous, disgusting people they can be. Some are cold, callous and rude to the flight crew. It always helps your experience to be cordial to those serving you, in any and all arenas, it never benefits you to be mean to them.
I rarely talk to anyone on a flight, but never when I'm in 1st, these are not my people.
First class no less. I imagine there were Republicans and Democrats there. If true, reminiscent of the reception those service men and women returning from the Vietnam War received.
