THere are two types of elections. General elections and referendums. Referendums are when the people vote yes or new on a specific issue. In contrast, in a general election the voters vote for a person.
Unless the winner has a huge majority, you can't say the had a mandate for every issue he favored.
For example, if the main issue is the economy, voting for Canditate X who reflects your views on the economy does not say whether most people support his view of foreign policy.
I have never seen the country more divided. If either candidate gets 52%, that canditate will have to appeal to the center or we will be even more solidified in contrary positions.
