It's Joseph Goebbels, although the idea expressed is being used effectively by the current

"Why of course the people don't want war. Why should some poor slob on a farm want to risk his life in a war when the best he can get out of it is to come back to his farm in one piece? Naturally the common people don't want war; neither in Russia, nor in England, nor in America, nor in Germany. That is understood. But after all, it is the leaders of the country who determine policy, and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is to tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country."

Later, I'll reveal the source of this all too familiar looking quote.

Although from a despicable source, the logic is absolutely correct.

And thankfully, there is no one in George W.'s gang of "Mayberry Machiavellians" who is of the caliber of Goering, or Goebbels or Speer etc.

I think that the reason why George W.'s crew is less effective, and therefore less dangerous, is that they serve two sets of masters. There's no question that many are idealogues and subscribe to the neocon dogmas; but at heart, they're always looking to cash out. The basic argument is that there is only a narrow window of opportunity for them to monetize their positions of influence (e.g., Cheney with Halliburton and Richard Pearle with his Trireme Corporation). Their constant quest for money, on the government's dime, makes them much more vulnerable.

If we has someone as capable as Speer, we'd be on top of our crumbling infrastructure....

Opportunist, yes, but the man was a great builder/organizer.  If only he had a consience back when it counted...

Yes, it was the organizational genius of Germans like Speer that made the Nazis as formidable as they were - not to mention all of the lower and middle management that made everything possible.

As we, as a nation, have now invaded a country for the first time unprovoked, as we have tortured in contravention of the Geneva Convention, as we have suspended the Writ of Habeus Corpus, as we have unilaterally abrogated international treaties, I have wondered of late what our responsibilities are as individuals.

I wonder about how our consciences are doing these days.

with  you on the latter points.  Actually the third Reich was a mess war effort wise until given over to Todt and Speer in the last days.  Parts of the effort were superb all the war, but the attempts to start too many projects and inter-office squabbling helped to drain alot of their resources.  Thank god!

And very, very fortunate we had J. Robert Oppenheimer (Jewish) heading up the U.S. Manhattan project to build the atom bomb, while the Germans only had Werner Heisenberg (good German).

If Hitler didn't have his "Jewish obsession" and managed to keep his Jewish nuclear scientists working for him instead of us, WWII might have turned out very differently.

Hmm! I guess this keeps that Jewish theme going. Maybe there really is a Jewish "conspiracy"?
