What needs to happen is that soldiers who will supervise prisoners need to be better screened and better trained.  If Rumfield's iniative is successful, the result will be that many people in this country as well as in the world in general will view the effort being something done by people who have something to hide.
There are many great conerstones of our democracy, but one of the most important is the relative transparency of information flow when important events are happening in and with our nation - Rumfield's action is a step back away from that transparency.

Secrets are dangerous things in government - when you hide what you're doing, it sure looks like you have something to hide. This is certainly in keeping with the Bush Administation's fear of public oversight - witness their insistence on keeping Cheney's energy policy meetings shrouded. There may have been nothing untoward in those meetings, but their unwillingness to disclose the participants and the agenda certainly don't make it look that way.

you are only as sick as your secrets, and if you want to know how advanced a society is, look at how they treat their prison population.

Their (Rumsfeld & Co.) only regret in this ordeal is the fact that they got caught!  Do you really think this is the first time something like this has happened???  It's just that the other times there were no cameras.  Now he wants to make sure they don't get caught again.  And I agree with you, this action only makes things worse and proves that these guys have a lot to hide. But that's ok, because as the old saying goes, this is just another nail in their coffin!

its quite clear that our society is afflicted by reverse-racism.  It is a sad day when there is apparently no concern for the rich White guy.  I mean, one cannot get into Yale nowadays unless your Daddy went there.
