Israel has less than 12 months to keep from getting nuked!
Shabtai Shavit, retired deputy director of Mossad, says that Iran will have nukes in about 12 months and as soon as they have them- Iran is gonna let them fly! I believe him too!
Taking out the nukes and rockets in Iran aint gonna be no milk run like the Iraq Osirak Nuke site was back in 1981.
I think it might be a near suicide run for the Israeli air force. There might be dozens and dozens of nuke and rocket sites. Plus, the Iranians are bragging about how their nuke sites are fortified.
So Israel might have to try a total takeout of the Iranian air force.
I think the only way for success is for China, Russia and the USA to have a big high level conference and unanimously agree that Iran has to be taken out. That way we can all pound on Iran at the same time.
I hate to imagine what the whole world will be like if Iran does a massive first strike against Israel. Most likely, Israel will be able to get a few nukes fired back at Iran before they are obliterated. But after the initial foray dozens of other countries will start maneuvering. India and Pakistan might start lobbing nukes. Russia and China might start lobbing nukes.

There is no assurance that a threat of a counterstrike means anything to Ahmadinejad. He is into the martyr syndrome, and if his whole country blows up his clouded mind thinks the Iranian people will go to heaven.
is Ahmadinejad the commander-In-Chief of the Iranian armed forces? does he have the authority to order whatever nuclear weapons Iran possesses to be used?
not likely speculation, but what if the Iranian military overthrew the present gov't and offerred to open it's facilities to US/UN inspection, but at no time promised to turn over or to destroy whatever nuclear capability it possessed? good deal or bad deal?
what if the Iranians offerred an even more intriguing proposition -- full inspection and disclosure on the condition that Israel and Syrian were to submit to indentical inspection regimes? good deal or bad deal?

It would be an interesting gambit for Ahmadinejad to play. We know our "friends" in Israel would never agree and it would shift a large part of the blame to them.
IOW It would be your dream scenario. I know how it would play with the rest of the world, but I do wonder what the spin doctors would do with it over here. As I said, "Interesting"

Israel has one EXCELLENT leg to stand on, though. It has NOT signed the Non-Proliferation Treaty, so it's under no obligation to refrain from any nuclear research, to refrain from weaponizing any of it's devices, etc...
The issue of how and where and under what circumstances Israel acquired the bulk of it's initial nuclear technology is strictly a matter of bilateral US-Israel relations, and ther US surrender on that one a long time ago. Senator BHO won't even have to wear his US-Israel lapel pin.
Mutual Assured Destruction, the theory of deterrence worked like a charm back in the Cold War. But that assumed your enemy like drinking vodka and fucking more than the alternative.
I really want to know. How do you negotiate with Iran? What do you promise them? 98% of the Iranians are like the Russians, they like to drink whatever, and fuck whatever. It's the mullahs and Revolutionary Guards that are a bit off kilter.
Do you continue with sanctions? Do you wait for them to have nukes, then monitor on a regular basis? Would you ever authorize a preemptive attack?
A couple of questions -- why would China want to take out its largest oil supplier and if the Iranians build a nuclear weapon in a year who is going to supply them with the required weapons-grade enriched uranium because they don't have the ability to process it themselves?
but he is also correct about China. Why would China, contrary to it's own interests back our play with Iran? For that matter, why would Russia?
China will do what's best for China, they are not our friends, nor our allies. They are a sovereign nation with their own agenda. Some of the time their interests are parallel with ours such as with N Korea. In the case of Iran we are competing for the same supply of oil. China gets about 60% of it's imported oil from the ME and they are Iran's biggest customer.
If we are looking for help with Iran from the Chinese, we are looking in the wrong place.
When Obama becomes president, Israel won't have a chance to return fire because Obama will already force the UN nuclear watchdog to inspect Israel for nuclear warheads prior to Iran nuking Israel. Obama will order the UN to disable Israel's nuclear capability!

they don't even let the US look at what's at Dimona, and for a very ggod reasdon -- most of what's there is based on technology misappropriated from the US.
Kill two evil birds with one stone. Maybe, just maybe, if our oil from the mid east is cut off, we'll get off our collective asses and start drilling in Alaska and off the coast of Cal and Florida.

I don't know how they calculate all the possible scenarios and then put a percentage to each one.
