Conservative Failures? One Conservative's Perspective.

A response to The E Ticket’s rather naive post below, one caveat, this is my opinion; other conservatives will most likely disagree with some or all of my opinions.

Automobile Safety:  While I agree that the Automobile Industry fought safety laws, a quick look at the make up of both Houses of Congress during those years reveals a majority of Democrats in office, with the ability to pass any Safety Laws that they embraced.  One might also question the extent of lobbying Republicans (Conservatives) when they had little impact on any legislation.  Follow the money E Ticket; the majority was going to Democrats, the party of the Trade Unions who also opposed the Auto Safety Legislation!

Auto Mechanics:  This is just imbecilic; why not blame Conservatives for tornados?  However, if by this you would embrace legislation to demand competence of auto mechanics, why limit it to auto mechanics?  Why not a Competence Law for all industries?  Then we could hire a lot more lawyers to enforce it, at the publics expense, and raise all of our taxes to pay them!  On the other hand, why not just go to a more reliable mechanic, the bad ones will lose business and go away.  No, in your perfect world the Democrats (Liberals) will take care of this problem for you.  In the words from the movie “Arthur” from his butler. “should I hold your dick for you while you piss, sir?”

The Battle of the Taxi Cabs:  See Auto Mechanics!

The Cable Industry:  Deregulation also allowed for the advent of a very competitive Satellite Dish TV industry.  Basic service is now below 1984 levels in my area.  $29.95 basic service, free installation for two TV sets.  Countless channels and you, E Ticket can get X rated stuff to wack off to.

The Corporate Special Interest System:  To express the idea that Conservatives benefit any more than Liberals from Corporate lobbying shows your naiveté.  It would seem that your better alternative would be more closely described as Socialism.  It also reveals somewhat of a “tin foil hat” mentality.

Corporate Welfare:  On this I would agree insofar as it is bad, but to insinuate that Conservative are more culpable again exposes your naiveté.  You might want to check out the pork that Senator Robert Byrd has gained for his cronies over the years, not to mention the extent of their gratitude!

The Cuyahoga River:  See Automobile Safety!

The Drug Industry:  Doctor’s over prescribing drugs is a Conservative failure?  Could it be the Malpractice Lawsuits might have had something to do with it?  And who is one or possibly the largest contributor to Democratic (Liberal) Politicians?  The Trial Lawyer Association!  Every attempt of Tort Reform has been blocked by Democrat’s (Liberals) for decades!

The Exploding Ford Pinto:  See Auto Safety.

The Exxon-Valdez Oil Spill:  Try as I have, I can’t see the relevance in this.  But again, both Houses of Congress were controlled by Democrats (Liberals) when the Exxon-Valdez was constructed.  By the way, the coast of Alaska has already rebounded after extensive cleanup paid for by Exxon.  The knee jerk, hysterical claims that it would be many decades or hundreds of years before it was restored are just that, hysterical.

Global Warming:  Again, try as I have, I can’t see the relevance of this in party politics.  Of course your knee jerk claim of 90% of the scientific communities agreement is just claptrap.  The science on this is no more than theory and that may just be a natural occurrence considering the preponderance of Ice Ages in the planets history.  You might recall that there were no SUV’s back then (for reference check the BC comic strip)!

Insurance Companies:  The cost of medical care in this country has risen consistently since the advent of Medicare.  Just like everything else, once the Federal Government is involved, the waste increases exponentially.  Just consider what it will cost if the Government is in total control of it.  You really don’t have to consider it too much, just look at the abysmal shape the Canadian Medical System is in.  The hospitals in Palm Springs, California are filled with Canadian’s with money, here to get what they are either refused or put on endless waiting lists for in Canada.  Canada’s best and brightest are not entering their medical schools, like all Socialist systems the standards are falling, fast!

Jack in the Box:  If your insane claim that as many as 9 million a die from food borne illness is accurate, in a little over 25 years we will all be dead!  And again, your insinuation that the fast food lobby only lobbies Conservatives is moronic.

Mc Donald’s:  Mc Donald’s is a major contributor to Democratic Candidates and causes and a very Liberal company, in the mold of the Walt Disney Company.

The Media (Part 1):  “The primary goal of the media is to make money”, duh!  I know that is an anathema to socialist like yourself, but IT IS THE PRIMARY GOAL OF ALL BUSINESSES! They air “sensationalism, sex, violence, etc, because that is what people want to watch and they keep their remotes out of their hands so that they can show those evil commercials to them!

The Media (Part 2):  That the media is not responsive to criticism of their sponsors is again – duh!  Isn’t that what we have “Public Television” for?  Why don’t you call Bill Moyers about it?  Then again, nobody watches him.  As far as workers issues are concerned, could it be that the majority of people who watch the televised media don’t really give a rat’s ass about the things that you do and would and do change the channel when these issues are aired? If the majority of the audience wanted “workers related stories” then some “money hungry” television executive would most likely give it to them and make more money (doh), if you disagree, get out the tin foil!

The Minimum Wage:  As a business owner and a conservative, I agree that market forces should determine wages, not the government.  Your contention that the job market does not operate by the usual laws of supply and demand is ludicrous and without reason.  When the unemployment rate drops below 5.5% I have found in my 30 plus years as an employer that the only people available are what most would consider unemployable!  I am talking about the uneducated, the unreliable, poor work ethic, poor attitude, etc, and all things under those individuals control.  Your assumption that there is some kind of collusion to hold the unemployment level at 6% reveals you are indeed in need of a “tin foil hat”!  I might add that in my 30 years as an employer I have never hired anyone, male or female, old, middle or young, white, brown, black, yellow, red or rainbow for an entry-level job at the minimum wage.  I look for the best, brightest, pay them accordingly and expect them to perform.  I have fired plenty of them for not meeting my expectations!  You see I am one of those greedy bastards that think my business is more important than just income for me, it also feeds, houses and allows several others “employee’s” to reach their goals.  Is there corporate greed out there, hell yes there is!  However, they loose great people and in time they collapse, as they should.  Here is a concept that may be way over your head, but business is a synergy between people.  I invested my collateral, I had the idea, I took the risk and I make more money than any of my employee’s!  They in turn get compensation commiserate with their ability and efforts.  If they feel they can get better compensation elsewhere they can go with my best wishes and an honest letter of recommendation, if I think them indispensable, then I will raise their compensation.  It works, its called Free Enterprise and it is what has made America the envy

Very good post with many salient points made, although I admit that I do not agree with some.  And best of all, you stayed on point and mostly avoided name calling.

Deregulation of Cable Industry had nothing to do with  creation of Satellite TV [by California based Hughes Electronics.]

Hughes Electronics [then called Hughes Aircraft], had executives with the foresight to create the industry.

But, whichever party was responsible for creation of the telecom act of 1996, should be "spanked" to say the list!

When satellite TV came on the scene the dishes were huge, and the cost prohibitive for almost anybody, not to mention those huge dishes.

Deregulation of Cable, and the clusterfuck that came out of it gave birth to the industry.  If proves the ability to American business to adapt to a problem and profit from it.

That my friend is Free Enterprise and I would contend that between Liberals and Conservatives, Conservatives are more user friendly for business in general.

The Telecom Act of 1996 can and should be amended or dumped.  Since it was signed into law in 1996 it would seem both parties would share the blame.
