I've been ready posts about "neocons" and Bush supporters in general beging evil people who only care about money and power as compared to the morally superior left. In fact, its a major reason I don't post here much - too many bitter, paranoid, conspriacy theorists posting utterly inane nonsense.

He and I have been political polar opposites and agreed never to discuss Bill Clinton or George W. However, I want to mention something. And remember, this is NOT a bash on conservatives, liberals, Republicans, or Democrats.
I am not going to cast blame here, but make an observation that I believe you will agree with The Answer.
The USA has become a very divided nation. This division is along, class and economic lines for the most part. I believe the division of this nation began mostly after WW2 with the boomer generation and as been accelerating ever since.
The class and economic divsions have grown from a small ditch to a chasm the size of the Grand Canyon. We have seen CEO salaries go from 11 times a workers wages in the 50s to 200 times that in the 00s. We have seen religous fundamentalist go from being people FOR social justice (they helped Jimmy Carter get elected in 1976)to going to not being for social justice.
The middle claass is shrinking. These divisions are widening. They widened under Clinton and Bush. Even during Reagan the nation grew more divided.
I believe you are seeing the symptoms of this division.
I am honestly afraid, that without unity in the nation, this is the lead in to a massive Civil War in the USA in about 10-20 years when the generation AFTER the boomers realize what has been stolen from them, by both political parties and the corporations.

I took a class in graduate school 10 years ago about the shifting distribution of wealth (the loss of the middle class) -and this was in a top MBA program. Add to the mix the relentless emergence of huge competitors like China and India who think $15/hr is a king's ransom.
I keep trying to understand the root cause of all the venom, on both sides. And especially why it seems to have people grouped into lockstep with an array of issues, without any critical thought. Here's my ideology's side! Take that you fucking evil moron.
And it cuts both ways. Why?
1. Basic facts without lots of spin are hard to come by. So the position one takes is not by virtue of analysis, but by virture of the personality of the presenter of fact one relies upon.
2. The stakes are higher. Everyone can feel the potential of the 21st century. For the first time, we can wipe out the planet, and the ways to do this are growing. This is coupled with a media/corporate climate of creating chronic fear/anxiety/crisis to drive purchasing behavior.
I think this is the recipe for terrible conflict: poor information when the stakes are high. I mean, it does feel like Orwell was just 20 years off.
Maybe I am going to focus more on nookie. 'Cept, shit, I stopped hobbying a while back, but right now I'd like to love a strange women to quiet the concern I feel.

REALLY changed is that today, you can engage in discussions so freely with so many people AT SUCH AN ARM"S LENGTH (ie, anywhere in the world) that no one concerns themselves about getting their face punched in for flappin' off anymore.

I don't consider myself liberal but anyone that posts on TER would be considered liberal, at best, by a significant portion of the U.S. population. Adult site - promiscuity - liberal morals -etc. I don't agree but that's beside the point.
To identify yourself as a democrat/liberal or republican/conservative is often an act of sloth. Instead of independently arriving at your own conclusion regarding an issue - you fall in line with the party position. Both parties are inconsistent and ultimately bend their idealogy based on self preservation. Instead of looking at alternative views and arguments, your spoon fed selected facts and views from your favorite news reporter. They frame the issues. Your comfort level increases over time. It's easy. Who has time to slog through all the information.
Anyway, embarrassed no. Each person's post stands on its own. There's no shortage of idiots across the spectrum. I'm one of those idiots that is all over the road.

For a really smart guy, you've bit. Shame on you. You get into that polarizing Witlessism, "either you're with us or against us", and I thought you were a lot smarter than that.
So, in your Weltanschaung, either you're with the evil, corrupt neocons, or you're a liberal? Frankly, this is disingenuous and offensive.
What it comes down to is who you believe. From my own extensive study of political thought and history, two areas which I'm fairly strong in, it's clear as day what's going on. But it doesn't really matter, becasue you and I don't have the power to stop it. We can only sit and watch until 2007 or so. If history is any guide, the neocons and their supporters will be shown the door. But in the upcoming WW III ahead, this one is going to be messy, some nukes will be tossed and the losses will likely be in the billions. All over an energy source which will be obsolete in 35-40 years or so.
