An aside to mari-----John Stuart Mill is considerered to be an intellectual giant of Philosophy; same goes for such conservative titans as Edmund Burke & Wm F Buckley. A pity so many conservatives don't follow the lead of the latter 2 philosophers.

Lastly, mari, you don't consider Liorr to be a uneducated dope ? I think you'll get a spirited debate from many here & on sports about that.

If Liorr were spouting left-wing dogma, I'd be saying the same thing: the guy is a cretin.

Truer words never spoken. Of course not a generality, because look at such contemporary conservative intellectual giants as George Will, Chas Krauthammer, Pat Buchanan, et al. As for this board, , the conservatives have their articulate/cogent coterie : John Galt, DNC phil, Gag, Croix, Timbow, et al. Hell---even PW doesn't bother me------he comes up with some good arguments from time to time-----except when he lapses into priggishness.---;)

However, despite these exceptions, I find that when it comes to this board, the majority of offensively, uneducated/stupid shit comes from conservatives : FFP, snow,, mrnotrouble,nuguy46 & ( particularly ) Liorr. I don't mind them pushing a conservative agenda at all; it's just that they do it in such an offensively DUMB manner, that irritates me.

Why does this "mindset" prevail ? The link below might furnish some answers.

OK, back to my hiatus.

       You cannot necessarily make a judgment about someone's intelligence or character solely from reading his posts and that is all the evidence we have about our fellow posters.

      You still haven't figured out that Quad, a very intelligent guy, has been playing you for two years with his ninth grade "I'm just a janitor" personna. You struck out completely on Mr. NoTrouble and Pitching Wedge. Maybe Liorr is playing you as well.

      All we know is that he chooses to use the TER boards like Twitter rather than the way we use it. Better sharpen up those "detective skills" before you pronounce half the board as not meeting your IQ standards.

Especially considering that "conservatives" "liberals" etc have changed so much in the ensuing 150 years since this quote to have no relevance whatsoever to the political landscape of today. Except of course to make whiny libs feel superior to the conservative political opponents.

Repeating a political mantra long enough doesn't  make it true, it just makes the repeater of such bullshit look small, petty, and incapable of independent thought, but I am sure that Willy and Pri feel quite intellectually superior by quoting these 150 year old "words of wisdom"

take for example willy. willy no doubt has a large store of knowledge and can whip out a multi paragraph post citing scientists, charts, history etc, etc, etc. Yet when we get to the meat of the matter, the "so what?", if you will, he falls flat on his face and usually ends up either lying or deflecting. Yet Platipus gets a hardon over willy. and yet most everyone else despises willy. how does that disconnect happen?

i am inarticulate,

at least when comparing the literary quality of what I type to someone like John G.  however I look at the world and quite often come to the same conclusions as John. the difference being he can express himself via the written word much better than i can. that's why he's a writer and i'm a nail pounder. but i used to be in the restaurant business and taught myself construction. my clients are often multimillionaires. am i smarter than pri gives me credit for or are my clients rich stupid people? how many rich stupid people do you know.

The "smart people" know that Obama is by far the lesser of the two "evils" when it comes down to picking a President. In other words, they know that Obama is trying to fix the problems caused by 2 terms' worth of deregulation, which effectively rendered regulators agencies (e.g. SEC, OCC, FFIEC, MMS, etc.) powerless and allowed businesses to have their way at the expense of the national and global economies.

To be fair, the Dems made the same mistake of deregulation back in the 1970s, which in turn led to the Savings & Loans crises of the time.

Excellent points. The credit card industry found that their highest sources of interest income (i.e. interest on rollover balances) and fee income (late, overlimit, etc.) were from the higher educated professional segments of society (lawyers, doctors, professors, etc.). As smart as these professionals were in their respective fields, they were not so skilled when it came to managing their own personal finances.

I can confirm that GaGambler does embody the spirit of "Do as I say, not as I do" with respect to certain activities (vulgarity, taking things personally, etc.). While he is not the only person who embodies that spirit, it is especially noteworthy as he is a volunteer TER mod and possesses certain powers and responsibilities that are not available to the rank and file TER members.

I mention this as it is relevant to the inherent hypocrisy of one's calling out others for certain actions and taking action against them, when one has already performed identical or very similar actions.

Issues have changed, but the core of what is liberal philosophy and conservative philosophy has remained very much the same, even going back to 250 years ago.

What's changed more than anything, is where the 2 major political parties fall on the issues. If your average Limbaugh-listening conservative read the words of Madison or Jefferson (without knowing the author), he'd think they were coming from Karl Marx. If they read the words of Benito Mussolini, then they'd think they were reading Jefferson.

No, I do not think conservatives are dumb.

I do think that conservative politicians play upon the fears of most of their constituents, who in turn rarely seek to challenge the information that they are fed.

I play golf sometimes with a conservative who still believes that Obama is not a US citizen. He also believed Palin would make a great VP and President one day, decrying the "liberal elite media" for demonizing her, right up to the point where she made a reality TV show. Then he fell strangely silent about Palin after that.

If you follow politics closely enough, it's pretty easy to debate a conservative. They only think in talking points.

You've heard 'em. "The constitution says freedom of religion, not freedom from religion"

or

"the bible says Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve"

or

"Obama's doubled the national debt"

or

"Saddam's WMDs were shipped to Syria"

or

"tax cuts bring in more tax revenue"

These are all pretty simple-minded ideas. In fact, it's often quite adorable to see one of these dumb shit conservatives actually attempt to use their own grey matter. It's like the wheel is spinning, but the hamster's dead.

All you gotta do to confuse them is to introduce them to information they don't have. They never have the wherewithal to counter such an argument, because all of their mental processes are being used up to take in the new information without going into complete melt-down.

     Further,  many persons such as myself have what would commonly be described as "liberal" positions on some issues and "conservative" positions on others. So your quote from 1866 shows no more than that the speaker really had not thought about his point very thoroughly.

    And I don't consider any off the Board conservatives you name as being "just dumb."
