Have you ever read Malcolm Gladwell's 'Outliers'? He had a similar story about how the Jews in New York entered the garment industry, but the theme was about their transition to other professions.
You could look through history and see various industries that basically no longer exist in this country, and as a result these so-called good paying jobs have been disappearing for the past 50 years. At the same time, new industries/companies have been created that no one thought possible 10, 20 or 30 years ago. Unfortunately, no skill, or low skilled positions will continue to disappear. One only has to look at the unemployment rate and income disparity between someone with an undergraduate degree, and one with a high school diploma or less.
A fascinating documentary about the rise and fall of the garment industry in America, and I think a microcosm of the decline of American manufacturing in general.
Some interesting insights from the old-time owners, as well as the workers and unions.
No I didn't see it, but will try to find it on HBO On Demand. As an "old timer" in the South East, at one time I had an "outlet store" as an account for the "designer" jean lines I carried in every town that had a sewing machine. In the 5 southern states, I had over 350 active accounts, and I could have sent my 10 year old daughter, with a pad and pencil, into each account asking : Hi Mrs/Mr Jones...my dad wants to know how many pair of jeans you want this week ? ". Unfortunately, none of the 350 are no longer around. I know first hand about the "Rise and Fall" of the garment industry. It is in fact a microcosm of American manufacturing.

story about a shoe factory in Northampton England. The family business is failing and the owner begins laying off workers. The market for traditional quality expensive men's shoes cannot compete with inexpensive poorly made knockoffs from Eastern Europe.
The owner of the company asks each worker he lays off what can I do? What can I do? Not to tell the plot of the story. He develops a market and his company survives and thrives.
I am sorry to hear about the loss of an industry for I know it's painful. People lose jobs, then their house and sometimes more. Men have a tendency to define themselves by their jobs. When the job is lost, a man loses part of his identity.
However the loss of job can also be an opportunity. An opportunity for growth.
