Horizontal drilling is especially effective where you have vertical faults, you can drain as much oil from a single horizontal well as from a dozen vertical wells. It's also proving to be effective in draining "tight" shale formations, which hold the bulk of this countries untapped oil. It also holds promise in environmentally sensitive areas like the California coast.
Pretty sure them boys have the latest tec. stuff for drilling, good saftey standards, hellva a reputation in all the major oil fields of the world. After all who are the three biggies in oil.

The sad part is we are not talking about what is best for our country and our people. Neither party has done it. All they want to do is talk up irrelevant and stupid issues which will affect our country negatively in the long run.

I've known about shale oil since the early 1970's, but at that time, the recovery of it was considered too expensive per barrel to go after it. Like GaGambler, said, the techonolgy has improved to the point where it is now cost effective. My youngest sister is excutive secretary for an oil company that buys the rights to closed wells, reopens them, and extracts more oil. That has also become cost effective. They have wells offshore in the Gulf, and California. Btw, it's not a Chinese company, lol.
I'm a artisan jewelry designer and part-time provider; I'm not a wildcatter (do they still use that term?). I read a lot and even occasionally write articles, but I only read what I hear about. This was the first I'd ever heard about horizontal drilling.
