You aren't just sore about this Phil, because it makes religious nuts look like religious nuts?

I'm quite glad the media is covering this story. The rapture-right has been scaring the shit out of people for quite a while, and a few use these kind of scams to make a buck. It's about time the media showed that these people are full of it.

I want to live to see the end of the world.
I want it to happen in my life time.
I don't know what the end of the whole world actually means. I don't know if it's the end of the physical world or only humanity. Yeah, everybody and everything has an end.
But I don't want to go alone. It would be nice for everybody to go to hell, all at once.

I mean WTF the world is ending in a few hours, why would they even bother with politics?

but it's not really any different than the Mayan "prediction" if you really want to stretch the word that the world will end in 2012. The number of people that actually give at least some credence to that equally silly prophecy is a bit concerning, there really are that many stupid/gullible people out there.

and yes I get your reference to Phil trying to claim that even logical people can find religion, I agree with you that the two are mutually exclusive. Believing in fairy tales once you have reached adulthood should be grounds for being declared incompetent, but that's an argument for another day.

I hope he/she enjoys every penny, I can't bring myself to feel sorry for people who are that fucking stupid.

As for the original prophet, whoever the fuck he is, I am sure he will have no problems at all explaining away his "mistake" although I doubt he will even acknowledge he was wrong. Gullible people want to believe, and I am sure he will come up with some bullshit that will keep his flock happy and willing to send him more money. They always do. lol

If true, I wish they would get on with it, 200 million less bible thumpers would be a good start.

There are some stories that are so insignificant that they make my head spin, and the amount of coverage they get can only be attributed to the 24-hour news cycle where they have to fill time, and then a nothing story is picked up.

The worst of these stories are when a infintesimal number of people have a weird view and it is on CNN and every other source.

The number of people who beleived this silly idea was so insignificant.  The same is true with the nut who burnt the Koran or the jerks who protest at gay funerals.  The "congregations" consist of about 30 people, which is about 1 millionth of the population, and the amount of air time was insane.  (Before you correct me and say they had 300 people, if they did, that is one one hundreth of the population, which leads to the same result.)

This is pretty typical.  Not only have I never met anyone like this, no one I spoke to ever met anyone.  When you do the six degrees of separation thing, you can see how minor these stories are.

When the so called News outlets runs with Jerry Springer, et al, type of snippets, they have no credibility at all. As I often say, there are no real News Outlets in US any longer. All have been taken over by extraterrestrial intent on passing ridiculous snippets as news to the American public to make them stupid.

Stopped watching CNN, FOX, MSNBC and all 24 Hr News Outlets long time ago. Went back to reading news papers which allows me to think even when I read stupid items or I can simply skip. I hoping that with iPad like devices, people will start reading news instead of hearing news from morons reading a script given to them.

The days Walter Cronkite, et al have gone by. Some like John King tries, he won't succeed because CNN has a different business objective.

I read somewhere (may be here) that, someone put up a Web site and made 93K or something. Those who paid would feel even stupider, if that is possible.

Fools abound!

I believe the prediction that you guys are talking about said that today was the "start" of the rapture, a 5 month period when the world ends.
The thing you should be questioning is were are the people that were "chosen" before the start, that was at 12:00am somewhere on the planet.
I can't remember the exact number, but thousands we're supposed to be taken to heaven, leaving the rest of us to deal.

I don't know if I fully blame the 24 hour news for these types of stories getting out, but I do blame distortion of these stories.

No. I am not sore.  There are a lot of nuts on both side when you get to the extremes.  News is something that affects people.  None of the stories I mentioned would have any effect if the media hadn't jumped in.

You may like to gloat at the stupid people on the other side, but do you really think there are not nuts on your side of the aisle?
