The Stain of Slavery - and Obama.

Below in another thread, one poster offerd that perhaps that by electing Obama, white voters would be trying to wash away the "Stain of Slavery"

This got me thinking of slavery - in general.  Much has been talked of concerning reparations, and making it "all right."

It is with much regret, that I must demand reparations from the the Italians, for enslaving my ancestors... who were captured during their battles with the government of the day, ya know, the Roman Empire.

Let's face it, Blacks have a legitimate issue with those who held slaves.  But let's also be honest, and face up to the fact that those people are dead... long dead.  Their legacy lies in the prejudice and intollerance of folk who differ from 'you,' be 'you' any color under the rainbow.  Were I black, and I am not, I would not demand reparation, but I would demand tollerance.  I would demand equal (not preferential) treatment and equal (not preferential tollerance) opportunity.  That is ALL any of us are guaranteed under the constitution.

Again, my hope is that if Obama were to loose, he would realize that he did not win.  I also hope that he would realize that he did have an equal opportunity to fail.  I would further hope that he stay active in politics, learn from his campaign, and help unite the country, as he has promised he would do if elected.  win or loose, that is an admirable goal.  And one worthy of him.

For the genocide waged on my people.

Care to try to guess my ancestry?  Might be hard since the British pretty much screwed with everyone.

PS:  On a lighter note, my favorite scene from Blazing Saddles.  Don't open if you are offended easily, or live in the "PC" world.

Seems to me they fucked over much of South and Central America... and lets lot forget the Frence... (gotta love em for bringing us the Viet Nam War) and the Germans... in short,  the whole of the You're-a-peeings....   yup - they own the rest of us more than a boat load of Carbon Credits...  lots more.

As long as us chinks get to share some land with the niggers I don't care what happens to you mics. lol

I don't know if you have ever been to Ireland, but there are some pissed off people that live there. I doubt if they would be willing to share any land with the "chinks" they seem to be more pissed off with the chinese in their midst than anyone but maybe the British. Something about immigrants stealing all the jobs while "Dubliners sleep in the street". More like passed out drunk in the streets if you ask me. lol

Sound familiar?

You would think that they might have a different prospective of tolerance by now.  Oh well that's probably why my family was kicked out of Cork along time ago.

It's been three or four years since I was in Ireland, but one thing that struck me was the resentment of the rather large Chinese immigrant population in Dublin.

It sort of reminded me of our own "white trash"(and black) whining about how the Messicans have taken all the jobs here in the US.

I noticed  an attitude similar to our own pissed off lefties, of both intolerance and that somehow it was Bush's fault. Go figure.

I don't know why you brought up the extremely radical position relating to reparations.  There are VERY few people, black, white or otherwise, who believe reparations are appropriate.

On the other hand, you mention that Obama had an equal opportunity to fail.  Do you really believe that the number of voters who would discriminate against Obama is less than or equal to the number who would discriminate against McCain?

Ya gotta read the post.  but since you have asked what I think to be a good question "do you really believe that the number of voters who would discriminate against Obama is less than or equal to the number who would discriminate against McCain?"  No, I don't.

And here is my thought, IF Obama looses, and can rise to the occasion, calm what might be a violent backlash - and disavow the feeling of "we were owed this presidency to this man - Because of the color of his skin..." And acknowledge that he had the chance....  where 50-100 years ago, even though slavery had been abolished, he would not have had the chance... he can become a GREAT American leader - equal to Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln and Roosevelt...  but if he cannot - he will embitter 12% of the population.... not a good thing.  He will have the power to end that bitterness.... EVEN if he looses... I pray that if he is not elected, he has the courage to do that, the will to prevail in that endeavor, and the strength to endure.

Therefore, he has the chance to fail.  From what I am seeing however, his associations (whether or not he believes the position of those with whom he has chosen to surround himself) are problematic for him, his inability to answer questions on the fly and without a script (if that holds during the debates) and his support of taxation, his lack of experience on the international stage (witness his public statement abotu splitting Iraq into 3, much to the chagrin of the Iraqis...) and his inability to grasp how to present his ideas in a coherent manner and in a consistant manner to disparate groups, well, those things will, of themselves, provide him with the opportunity to fail...

In short, it is going to be a long and hard battle for the whitehouse.  Inexperience and impatience may do him in.... I too, was once 45 and eager.

I do not thing it is a remote possibility, but I get your concern.

I am English/Irish which means...

1. I am EXTREMELY melanoma challenged.
2. It explains why I can't get along with myself.
3. I owe myself reparations, and I damned well better pay up now before I declare war on myself.
