Senate panel finds Russia interfered in the 2016 U.S. election

During an interview with NBC News’ Kristen Welker on “Meet the Press,” Donald Trump was asked whether he intends to fire FBI Director Christoper Wray, a man the president-elect himself appointed during his first term.

I recently saw the movie “The Apprentice” and it crystallized, for me, what Trump’s entire communication strategy is. It’s pretty simple, there are three things central to Trump’s philosophy: First, always attack. Second, lie whenever you need to. And third, never admit you’re wrong.  

And if you look at his interview with Welker, that’s exactly the formula Trump followed. He tried to turn every question that was asked of him into an attack on someone else. He lied when he needed to, and he refused to admit that he was wrong about anything.  

To that end, during the same interview, Trump made a threat against members of the Jan. 6 committee, telling Welker they should “go to jail.” Former Rep. Adam Kinzinger, who served on the committee then responded to that threat, told CNN he has “absolutely no worries” the president-elect will try to put him in jail.  

“First off, the executive branch can’t go after the legislative branch because we embarrassed him,” he said on Sunday. “That’s not a sin, that’s not against the law.” Kinzinger basically told Trump to bring it on. It’s the perfect response to the president-elect’s strategy of attacks and lies.

Now, I’m not saying that Trump can’t disrupt people’s lives with investigations — the power of a prosecutor to ruin someone’s life without ever bringing charges is real.

But having said that, whether it’s a civil or a criminal case, Trump and the lawyers who surround him know that the Constitution says defendants get a jury trial. They also know that in a criminal trial, the jury must agree unanimously, beyond a reasonable doubt, that a crime was committed. You can’t prove that without evidence, and prosecutors, frankly, don’t bring cases without evidence.

So despite the bluffs and bluster central to Trump's communications strategy, a lot of his threats, as Kinzinger says, are just howling.

Texas' strict abortion laws have hindered doctors in the state, leaving them unable to offer comprehensive maternity care to pregnant women, according to Dr. Emily Briggs, an obstetrician and family physician who works in central Texas.

Witnesses saw an armed group harassing Helene aid workers in a small Tennessee town, sheriff says

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Witnesses reported seeing a group of armed people harassing hurricane relief workers in a remote Tennessee community last weekend, a sheriff said Wednesday as a man in North Carolina appeared in court for allegedly threatening aid workers in that state.

Although there is no indication that the incidents are related, they come with the Federal Emergency Management Agency facing rampant disinformation about its response to Hurricane Helene, which came ashore in Florida on Sept. 26 before heading north and leaving a trail of destruction across six states. Reports of threats to aid workers sparked a temporary shift in how FEMA was operating in western North Carolina.

In Tennessee, Carter County Sheriff Mike Fraley said that witnesses reported Saturday that FEMA workers were being harassed by a small group of armed people in the remote community of Elk Mills, not far from the North Carolina border. No arrests were made, but Fraley said that the people who showed up were looking to cause trouble.

“It was a little hairy situation, no guns were drawn, but they were armed,” Fraley told The Associated Press.

Arrest made after threat to FEMA in North Carolina as hurricane relief operations continue

Federal Emergency Management Agency crews were forced to relocate due to a reported armed threat against workers, first reported by The Washington Post.

FEMA said later on Monday that it would resume normal operations because the threat turned out to be less serious than first feared.  

Initially, an email sent by the U.S. Forest Service to federal responders in Rutherford County alerted them of an apparent standdown after National Guard troops reportedly encountered armed militia saying they were "hunting FEMA."

Rumor: FEMA does not have enough money to provide disaster assistance for Helene.

Fact: This is false. FEMA has enough money for immediate response and recovery needs. If you were affected by Helene, do not hesitate to apply for disaster assistance as there is a variety of help available for different needs. FEMA’s Disaster Relief Fund has enough funding to support Hurricane Helene efforts and FEMA has what it needs for immediate response and recovery efforts. As FEMA Administrator Deanne Criswell has said, she has the full authority to spend against the President’s budget, but we’re not out of hurricane season yet so we need to keep a close eye on it.

Rumor: FEMA will ONLY provide $750 to disaster survivors to support their recovery.

Fact: This is false. This is a type of assistance that you may be approved for soon after you apply, called Serious Needs Assistance. It is an upfront, flexible payment to help cover essential items like food, water, baby formula, breastfeeding supplies, medication and other emergency supplies.
