When I saw him say these things on PBS two days ago, I wondered if it would get coverage. BUT, He is DEAD ON RIGHT about the underlying threat of population. Maybe that's why he's bought most of Montana (or is it Wyoming?). Sounds like he and Ben D. will be lonely neighbors some day.

Failure to address global warming will have us all dead or eating each other by mid-century.

So says Ted Turner, the restaurateur, environmentalist and former media mogul whose controversial comments have earned him the nickname "Mouth of the South."

in 30 or 40 years and basically none of the crops will grow," Turner said during a wide-ranging, hour-long interview with PBS's Charlie Rose that aired Tuesday.

"Most of the people will have died and the rest of us will be cannibals," said Turner, 69. "Civilization will have broken down. The few people left will be living in a failed state — like Somalia or Sudan — and living conditions will be intolerable."

One way to combat global warming, Turner said, is to stabilize the population.

"We're too many people; that's why we have global warming," he said. "Too many people are using too much stuff."

i remember that well, LTY was a chair in that dramatic forecast. and the soylent looked like squares of Playdough tha toddlers might fashion while recreating.  And a jar of preserves was $135.

But let's look more closely at TT's prophecy.  It's not clear if he's forecasting people relentlessly hunting down and killing others to eat, or if he's perhaps got a marginally less abhorrent idea of fear-ridden, hunger-crazed half-dead types eating the corpes of those already dead.  Which technically would make tham scavengers as much as cannibals.

So, what's the difference, moral and practical, if any, between:

1. hunting down people and eating them without killing them [our friend the wolf is an example of a predator who eats his prey while it's alive]?

2. hunting down people and killing them and then eating them?

3. eating only the corpses one finds while foraging and engaging in other  survival activities?

Admittedly, it's probably a set of distinctions without much difference.  Still, i think this topic is [forgive me] food  for thought.

As a practical matter. i think consuming the newly dead would be the first step down that very famous slippery slope.  and it would be steeply inclined as well as trecherous of footing.  The newly-dead obviously are in no position to object or to fight back [and they've gotten all the use out of their bodies that they're ever going to get], so it generally would be safer than hunting down a live victim. But you'd have to act fast, as there would no doubt be [a lot of?] competition for the corpses, and because of the heat, they're not going to keep all that long before turning. The battle here is definitely going to the strong, and the race to the swift.  No idea what the trade-offs would be between cosuming men versus women, the young versus the old, slender versus muscular versus fat, members of various ethnic/racial groups, etc...  For those survivors still able to keep a sense of humor in those horrific times, there would be new meaning, none of it especially welcome, in the expresson "hey, let's eat Chinese/Italian/French...tonight."  

Would religiously-inspired dietary restrictions fall by the wayside?  I imagine that keeping kosher, for example, would be quite a daunting task under TT's prediction.

TT's Hobbesian, Lord-of-the-Flies nightmare vision of a possible near future may be a bitter pill to swallow.  As always, i fear it's the most ruthless and the physically strongest who would survive.  Which then brings us  to considerations of evolutionary fitness and natural selection...

Went to a my niece's graduation at Drexel University in Philly  many years ago, (pre-Jane Fonda). Ted Turner was the commencement speaker. After he rambled on for what seemed like eternity, the graduates, parents, and guests looked at each other with quizzical expressions and asked, "What did he say"? First thing out of his mouth was, "All those here that do not have a high school diploma, raise your hands". His was the only hand that went up. After that, I knew we were in for whatever.

The film is set in the year 2293, a post-apocalypse Earth. The Earth is now inhabited mostly by the "Brutals", ruled over by a warrior class called "Exterminators" or "the Chosen". The Exterminators worship a huge flying stone head called Zardoz as their god, who teaches them:

I saw that flick when i was 17.  I had smoked 4 joints prior to watching it and it made no sense at all to me.  Subqequent herb-less viewing continue to make no sense to me.  How did that damn Zardoz head fly?
