I wonder if management stopped this on their own or only because they got caught.
The primary beneficiary was to be the Washington Post and the secondary one would have been the lobbyists, but what’s not clear is the BHO expectations here. They had to have been involved in the planning.
Times are tough and those darn lobbying restrictions just get in the way.

Washington Post publisher Katharine Weymouth said today she was canceling plans for an exclusive "salon" at her home where for as much as $250,000, the Post offered lobbyists and association executives off-the-record access to "those powerful few" - Obama administration officials, members of Congress, and even the paper’s own reporters and editors.
The astonishing offer was detailed in a flier circulated Wednesday to a health care lobbyist, who provided it to a reporter because the lobbyist said he felt it was a conflict for the paper to charge for access to, as the flier says, its “health care reporting and editorial staff."

But, of course, if you've read the Post lately you can see management is unable to cope with the economics of the post-Internet newspaper business and are desperate to find new income sources. Their current solution is to save costs by reducing content, so the Post is hardly worth reading any more.
The Wall Street Journal and the New York Times are the only great papers left.
