This really made my day -- how often do I get an opinion column or news article that allows me to unload on both the Israelis and their Christian suppoters?
I really gotta laffe -- did the Xtians really think that the Israelis were accepting Christian support for the reasons the Christians were offering it -- to convert the Jews to Christianity as a fulfillment of a condition of biblical prophecy fortelling the Second Coming of Christ? I mean, does anyone other than the holy rolling Xtian Fundamentalists actually believe Bibi Nathanyahu or Natan Sheransky is going to convert to some sect within Christianity? No wonder Ariel Sharon had a stroke -- he must have laughed himself to near-death at the very thought of this.
Some other questions arise in my fevered mind:
1. Will the Israeli actions which disadvantage the Arab Christians cause US Christian fundie types to reassess their support of Israel? [I'm betting not].
2. Will any Christian fundie leaders/spokesmen publicly criticize the Israeli gov't for these actions? [Not on your life -- they know better, and they're well-aware of AIPAC and it's neo-McCarthite tactics -- and they've been accused of anti-Semitism more times than they care to remember and don't want to be reminded of the truth of a lot of those accusations].
3. The Christian fundies -- who are such a powerful part of the base of the current Republican Party -- will they try to make their dissatifaction [if any] with these Israeli actions [if true?] politically resonant in the public sphere within the Reoublican Party? Don't make me laugh -- I don't want to join former PM Sharon in stroke-induced coma land]. Anyway, with POTUS Bush totally in thrall to the NeoConMen, with the egregious Cheney and Rumsfeld in league with the NeoConMen, and with Rice totally helpless in the face of THAT, what difference could it possibly make? Not that POTUS would understand, not that POTUS' religion is anything other than a revolting and transparent act of political expediency.
I can hardly blame the Israelis this time around -- they're only doing what they do best -- bamboozling and eventualy harming the interests of any and all foolish enough to offer them support. And probably laughing all the way to the West Bank!
Novak, it should be noted, has had the reputation [deserved or not?] of being one of the least favorably-disposed toward Israel political columnist in this county.
Henry Hyde has been a long time, very low key, and totally ineffective critic of Israel [pretty much like every critic of Israel in this country. what's wrong with us?].
Well, the self-deluded Christians made their bed, and their co-religionists subject to the jurisdiction of Israel now to sleep in it.

There was a point back in the beginning of this year where I thought by engaging you in offsite dialog, we might be able to go where we could not here on TER... that is, into a straight one on one dialog between two men of conscience with an honest disagreement.
But while your private missives were initially cooperative, your posts here on TER continued to drip with venom. to me, it seems you revel in the glory of showing your support for terrorists and their vile organizations in public, rendering my efforts to engage you in dialog completely irrelevant and immaterial.
The biggest difference I see between you and funtime69... he makes no bones about his bigotries, while you attempt to couch them in pseudo-intellectual diatribes consisting of bent facts, and outright fabrications no different than those of religious demagogues like Pat Robertson or Jerry Falwell. C'mon Doc, this is very moderate stuff -- reread the post -- the basic thrust of hostile criticism is aimed at the Xtian Fundies, certainly not a social grouping of which you approve. But are you willing to mute your criticism when they give voice to uncritical and unabashed support for the policies of Israel? [in a previous thread you did indicate that their support of Israel at times did make you a little uncomfortable].
Doc, did you miss the line which began [I think] "I really can't blame the Israelis too much this time..." [and then proceeded to characterize then uncharitably]?
Doc, you've got to accept the fact that the whole wide world DOES NOT SHARE you benign view of Israel and its actions. Why is that so hard for you to accept?
Soiled underwear? Embarassing but true, at times I'm very quick on the trigger [much like former PM Sharon] but in a different dimension of human behavior.

Reim, it's a simple matter of efficiency. Pretty much every other topic on this Board gets addressed with sufficient frequency and diversity of opinion as to make my additional contribution marginal. Yet this issue does not seem to get addressed frequently [except in the most paranthetical manner] and certainly w/o any diversity of opinion. So here I am, laboring away to bring another viewpoint to bear on an issue of some importance of every manjack in this bloody country. But that seems to bother you to no end?
BTW, not that it matters, but in the last month I've probably posted on immigration far more frequently than on my favotite topic.
