People have been trying to predict the peak oil date for decades, and it always keeps getting adjusted upwards. Hardly any of the predictions have accurately foretold the new discoveries.
But I will say that turning corn into alcohol is dumb dumb dumb. They were just talking about it tonight on that show w/hot babe Elizabeth Vargas and John Stossel. That ethyanol production is a great big ponsey game. It takes as much energy to make it as you end up with. One more big fat gov subsidy.
What we have to do is drill for oil up in Alaska. And if the caribous get in the way----blaam blam blam. Then we can take their carcasses to the rendering plant and turn them into oil too.
... We may be at a point where there is a limited supply of cheap oil, but there is a lot of oil around.
For one example, look at the oil shale in the US southwest. There is easily enough oil there to supply all US needs for generations. However it is expensive and messy to extract and distribute.
As with any commodity, the availability of the good depends on price.
We have lots of oil. We don't have the technology to make it easy and cheap to use.
And, as petrofuels become more scarce, their price rises. Making these alternatives more attractive and cheaper [relative to petrofuel costs] to explore, develop and exploit on a mass industrial/commercial scale. Which may then lead to a fall in petrofuel prices.
It's the getting from here to there which is the problem.
last year I used less than 55gal. of petrol-based fuel, and this year I hope to use none.... I feel sorry for you poor fuckers that are strapped into a big mortage, SUV-lease, spend-aholic marrage, and now gasoline will go over $4.00per-gal by July 4!
Sounds like mass-bankruptcy or mass-suicide is fast approaching!
...I've got thousands of gallons of used vegetable-oil from fast-food restraunts stored up... I've been running my diesels on it for years and they GIVE me the oil for free!
I'm glad I'm way ahead in this game, 'cuz competition will get tight as supply continues to get pinched...
BTW, when these "oil-wars" break out in the future it won't be the USA leading the battle-cry... America is the "has-been" of the world... It will be CHINA raiding the world for petrol! their thirst for crude is just developing, and they are a ruthless culture that does not value human-rights and does not honor international-agreements... Just wait until China's oil-lust peaks, THAT will be the true "crisis of the century"!
