""""""""WASHINGTON — About 1,500 American citizens remain in Afghanistan, and about a third of them are in contact with the U.S. government and hope to leave in the coming days, Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken said on Wednesday.
Some of the remaining 1,000 may not want to leave, Mr. Blinken said, describing an ever-changing estimate that the Biden administration has grappled to pin down as American troops wind down an evacuation effort that has overwhelmed the airport in Kabul, the capital.
That number does not include legal permanent American residents, or green card holders, he said.
Mr. Blinken said more than 4,500 U.S. citizens have so far been flown out of Afghanistan since Aug. 14, as the Taliban bore down on Kabul. He said the State Department has sent more than 20,000 emails and made 45,000 phone calls to identify and locate Americans in Afghanistan ahead of an Aug. 31 withdrawal of U.S. troops from the country after 20 years of war.
But Mr. Blinken sought to assure that any Americans or Afghans who have worked with the U.S. mission and want to leave after that date should be free to do so. “That effort will continue every day,” he said.
U.S. and allied planes flew an additional 19,200 people out of Kabul in the past 24 hours, officials said on Wednesday, as the Biden administration made substantial inroads into evacuating American citizens and Afghans who worked for the United States over the last 20 years.
More than 10,000 people were still inside the international airport in Kabul awaiting flights out of the country on Wednesday, and Afghans with proper credentials continued to be cleared into the airfield, Pentagon officials said.
With President Biden’s Aug. 31 deadline for the withdrawal of American troops rapidly approaching, tens of thousands of Afghans who qualify for special immigration visas are also waiting to be evacuated.
As of 3 a.m. in Washington, the United States had evacuated about 82,300 people from Kabul’s international airport since the government fell to Taliban forces.""""""

By the way, the "allied planes" were taking their own people out. They couldn't count on Joe to help them because he didn't even warn them that the fall of Kabul was imminent before last weekend.

Blinken did not include Green Card holders in that estimate. He only enumerated American Citizens.
I disagree with you in that I don’t think any poster on this board has “prayed” for Americans be left behind in Kabul. Let’s not overdo the exaggerations, OK?
You do bring up an interesting point, however, about those Americans who may choose not to leave. I don’t think theTaliban will search them out and kill them - that would destroy any credibility they hope to project in the world. However, I’m not so sure about the impossibility of their being arrested and accused of with whatever flimsy charges the Taliban could think of.
At that point, what would our response be? Could we be looking at another Iran hostage crisis?
I'm not a religious person, but I do “pray” that any Americans who contemplate staying give it a lot of thought.

1) We did get all OUR equipment out, just not the outdated old crap we left for the Afghans.
2) What was left: a couple of old C130s, a 50-year-old plane. A few A29 prop-driven ground attack planes, not good for anything outside of Afghanistan. A bunch of AK47s our military can't even use. A bunch of Humvees we don't hardly use any more and are a 50-year-old technology.

I am seriously asking. Has anyone heard of why any American would want to stay in a country run by terrorists with our military no longer around to protect them in less than a week? I am at a total loss on this one.

These numbers are highly inflated, but you are correct that our allies have been very successful in getting their people out. You are counting those, which has nothing to do with the ones that will be left behind by Joe come Tuesday. Turkey was supposed to be the last ones out, so they could cover our exit under the Trump plan, but they are leaving tonight. According to people who HAVE been in the military, there are about 4100 Americans left and there is no way to get them all out before the deadline. In fact, some are saying the last flights out will be Sunday, not Tuesday, and like I said this morning, some Congressional members are saying that Biden is going to promote the fiction that the ones he couldn't get out didn't want to leave. Only the dumbest of the dumb Libs will buy that. Who would want to CHOOSE to stay there under the Taliban with no guarantees of safety? Only someone with terminal cancer who is too weak to put a gun to their head. The Taliban will be happy to execute them and put them out of their pain and suffering.
