Trump had claimed the construction would not affect the White House out of respect for its history. Another lie told from the Huckster-in-Chief, who's spending his time focused on building his vanity ballroom instead of reopening the government, but I suppose that's understandable since he doesn't want the Epstein files released. Sad

...the new White House ballroom...

Having a separate ballroom wouldn’t work in inclement weather.
So, you're saying Trump didn't have the mental acumen to take into account the changing weather conditions with the seasons when he made his claims? That's pretty incompetent.
You seem to think there are only two explanations, which just isn’t true.
I love ballrooms. In fact, my favorite pair of underwear has huge ballroom.
The average person, when faced with the dilemma of adding on a ballroom or a swimming pool to their home will usually choose the swimming pool. Everyone can enjoy swimming naked in a pool, but dancing naked together in a ballroom just seems a little over-the-top, unless it's BigP wearing only dancing shoes and a bow tie, then it would be comedic entertainment. Who doesn't like a good laugh at his expense? Lol
This thread is about the hypocrisy of Trump saying one thing and doing the opposite.
If you don't take out a wall and rebuild the new space to seamlessly connect and blend in with the existing space, it's going to look like a room addition to a tract home. Do you really think Trump the real estate developer doesn't know what he's doing?
.
Trump said that construction of the ballroom “won’t interfere with the current building.”
“It’ll be near it but not touching it [the East Wing], and pays total respect to the existing building, which I’m the biggest fan of,” Trump said of the White House at the time.
- - -
So, Trump either lied or didn't know what he was talking. Your choice.
“won’t interfere with the current building,” he means the usefulness and traffic flow within the building, not that there won't be a wall or a bathroom relocated. At some point the two structures have to be connected. You don't have to know too much about construction to understand this. If you look at the artist's renderings that are online, you will see that the roofline and the three sides that are NOT connected to the new building remain unchanged. The current building shares ONE wall with the new building where they CONNECT. Obviously, you won't see the space where they connect internally when viewed from the outside. Why? Because . . . . wait for it, . . . . they are connected!!!! Is that really so hard for you to understand?
Don't believe your lying eyes.

expect to see on a remodel job. The FIRST step is to demo the part of the existing structure that you won't need for the finished project. You still don't know anything about construction, so you?
CDL: "You still don't know anything about construction, so you?"
Do YOU? "won't interfere with "the usefulness and traffic flow within the building, not that there won't be a wall or a bathroom relocated. Or the entire edifice?

http://archinect.com/news/article/150506025/as-white-house-starts-demolition-for-trump-s-ballroom-architects-discuss-preservation-and-permit-concerns
"... There is heated debate in the architecture and preservation community this week, as news reports on Monday show demolition crews with heavy machinery ***tearing down *****significant***** portions of the White House's East Wing*** (built in 1902) in preparation for President Trump's privately funded $250 million, 90,000-square-foot ballroom expansion first floated earlier this summer. ...
.
"For those not familiar with how this was supposed to work when the White House is to be renovated.
1. Initial Proposal: The White House is managed by the National Park Service (NPS) but used by the Executive Office of the President (EOP). Any proposed change, even by a sitting president, begins internally through the Office of the Curator and the White House Facilities Management Division.
2. Historic Review: The NPS, as custodian of the White House under the Presidential Residence Act and National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA), must review all alterations for compliance with Section 106 of the NHPA. This requires assessing potential impacts on historic and cultural resources in consultation with the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation (ACHP) and the D.C. State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO).
3. Planning & Environmental Oversight: The National Capital Planning Commission (NCPC) evaluates all major federal projects in the National Capital Region, including work on the White House grounds, for design, planning, and environmental impacts under NEPA (the National Environmental Policy Act). Public comment and design reviews are part of that process.
4. Aesthetic Review: The U.S. Commission of Fine Arts (CFA) reviews and advises on the design and appearance of any exterior modifications to the White House or its grounds.
5. Final Authorization: After approvals from NPS, NCPC, and CFA, the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) and the White House Chief Usher / Facilities Management Office finalize funding, scheduling, and logistics.
Only after completing this full process could any major construction or demolition legally begin.
Yet Trump ignored every step, acting unilaterally through executive order, bypassing oversight, and ordering demolition as if he were a monarch. The result: the people’s house, altered without the people’s consent. ...
.
"Major exterior or site work still triggers National Capital Planning Commission (NCPC) and U.S. Commission of Fine Arts (CFA) design reviews, along with NEPA environmental assessments. Any project involving government resources must also comply with the Anti-Deficiency Act and federal ethics rules on funding and gifts. ..."
expect to see on a remodel job. The FIRST step is to demo the part of the existing structure that you won't need for the finished project. You still don't know anything about construction, so you?
It's a new, additional facility. In Trump's own words on Truth Social, "It will be beautiful…it will be near [the East Wing], but not touching it. And pays total respect to the existing building, which I'm the biggest fan of. It's my favorite." So Trump lied, and you're ignoring/reinterpreting his words. You are right in another sense though and that is he is "remodeling" America [MAGA] by destroying parts of the existing government that get in his way.
It will totally destroy the architectural integrity and balance of the White House itself. AND it was done without any of the approvals that are required BY LAW for changes to historic national buildings.
We can only hope that some future President will tear it down and restore the White House to its former beauty and architectural integrity. That latter word is NEVER one associated with Trump.
showing us how little you know about the construction biz. If this is a job that needs to be permitted by the city or county, it would be classed as a remodel because you are altering part of the existing structure in order to expand it's size to incorporate the new construction.
"Respect for the existing building just means that it will still look like the white house, only extended on one side. Some remodels completely obscure the prior look of the original building. I can say with confidence that Trump has probably had more building experience than you, so why not reserve judgment until the project is finished? You make yourself look like chicken little complaining about what might be, rather than what is. If you don't like it then, start a petition to have it torn down. NO construction ever looks good after the initial demo has taken place. The final result is likely to be stunning as a place to welcome foreign dignitaries.
before altering an historical structure?
"No, permits were not obtained for the construction of the new ballroom because the White House claims demolition is not subject to permits and that the President has broad authority over White House renovations. The demolition of the East Wing, which began on October 20, 2025, has proceeded without approval from oversight bodies like the National Capital Planning Commission and the National Park Service because they are currently closed due to the government shutdown."
.
"By Trump’s telling, it will become a space where guests will mingle, sip cocktails and eat hors d’oeuvres until they are called into the ballroom for dinner. Trump said a set of windows in the room will be removed to create a passageway to and from the ballroom." - PBS News
Tell me, CDL, why would an excavator be needed to remove a set of windows for a passageway??
banquets, of which a state dinner is considered, there is always a foyer where people gather (and sometimes is the mingle area for cocktails) prior to opening the doors to the ballroom for dinner service. The East room becomes the foyer to the much larger ballroom. You would stop asking such stupid questions if you would take a few minutes and review the architectural plans and renderings that are online in various publications. (The local Palm Beach newspaper has a nice article comparing the proposed white house ballroom to Trump's Mar-a-Lago ballroom.) Google is your friend.
I don't give a rat's ass about how it resembles Mar-a-Largo. Who is he suppose to impress? Kim jung Un, Putin, Xi Jinping, George Santos, and CDL? What I object to is the lack of permitting and historical oversight. After all, he doesn't own the White House. He's loaned a residence, while he's under the people's employment, i.e. he's not a king - really. It's no different than the president of a university being afforded an official residence during his tenure, but he simply can't renovate/rebuild it of his own accord, because he doesn't own the property.

Of the WH.
But I think Trump has a long term goal or agenda here…. And that is
I AIN’T LEAVING …..
The Times writes: "White House is demolishing the entirety of the East Wing to make way for President Trump’s $200 million ballroom, a construction project that is far more extensive than he initially let on, a senior administration official said on Wednesday.
The tear-down should be finished by this weekend, according to the official, who was not authorized to speak publicly about the plans.
When Mr. Trump first announced his plans for the ballroom, he pledged that the East Wing wouldn’t be touched by the construction.
“It’ll be views of the Washington Monument. It won’t interfere with the current building. It’ll be near it but not touching it,” the president said. “And pays total respect to the existing building, which I’m the biggest fan of.”
But, upon further evaluation, the White House determined it was cheaper and more structurally sound to demolish the East Wing to construct the ballroom, rather than build an addition, the official said."
Political adds:
The ladies at The View seem to be really upset by this.
They don't care that a historical building is being partly destroyed without any oversight whatsoever.
You hacks are fully in the thrall of a sociopath.
The White House has been renovated many times throughout its history. I’m sure future presidents will be appreciative of Trump’s renovations when they are hosting state dinners.
It is grotesquely large and completely out of scale with the White House itself. I hope a future Democratic President knocks it down and Trump is forced to watch.
physical therapy/exercise room, Truman added on a balcony, which certainly changed the appearance of the WH, Nixon added a bowling alley, Ford added a swimming pool, which is still on the grounds, and Obama converted a tennis court to a basketball court because he was black (it's a joke, haters. Yes, I have heard of the Williams sisters). The one thing they all had in common is that no taxpayer money was used, which is exactly the way Trump's renovation will be, as well. Wealthy donors have long supported White House renovations wanted by presidents. Trump's will just be bigger and better than what any of his predecessors did.
I can sympathize with the Dems here. Their party is a dumpster fire and so they have to nitpick to find anything to complain about. I heard the illuminated letters at the top of building that will say 'TRUMP" will be much smaller than is typical of Trump skyscrapers elsewhere. It should be very tastefully done. Can't wait to see it.
CDL: "Truman added on a balcony, which certainly changed the appearance of the WH"
See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Truman_Balcony for photos of the WH (a) before (b) before with awnings in place and (c) after the balcony was added.

This is why it's stupid for Dems to get their panties in a bunch until they see the finished project. Thanks for making my point, Impp. This is just a deflection anyway to draw attention away from the Schumer shut-down. This is the week there are no more checks for government workers. Somebody should post Schumer's phone number here so those getting hammered from the shut-down can let Chuckie know what an asshole he is.
Democrats should wait "until they see the finished project" before getting upset? This is ridiculous on two levels.
First, when we have "the finished product" it will be TOO LATE to do anything about it.
That's why we have processes and institutions to vet projects like this, which Trump has completely bypassed.
Second we already know quite a bit about what it will look like. Apparently you have failed to read my earlier post which had an attachment showing a model of what this excrescence will look like. It's FAR bigger than the White House itself and is actually grotesque. So there's more than enough to go on to become enraged with what Trump is doing.
Doesn't know how to work with architects or construction companies? Would you feel better if some unelected bureaucrat from the swamp stamped something on the plans that shows it was also approved by some GS11 cubicle guy?
Can you tell me who vetted the basketball court for Obama?
Can you tell me who vetted the outdoor swimming pool for Gerald Ford, or the indoor swimming pool and exercise room for FDR? Do you think there were architects involved, or just government bureaucrats? BTW, FDR's indoor pool is now the WH press room where Karine Jean-Pierre lied to the American people for four years about Biden's dementia. They filled it in with concrete and nobody complained when a later prez demolished the pool. I'm sure the demo'd pool rubble looked pretty bad, just like the East Wing rubble does not.
My opinion is that this ballroom is just a diversion to get the news cycle off of Obama's unfinished and failing presidential library. Have you seen photos of it? It looks like a super-max prison. They have run out of money and the donor class is not stepping up. They are already 100% over budget. This failing tribute to Obama may prove prophetic after more info turns up on Obama's spying on Trump and the manufacturing of evidence at his direction during Trump's first term.
I think he's trying to kick up enough dust to people won't see what's going on. What he can't conceal is...
1) This has zero to do with Trump's ability to "work with architects or construction companies." It's about the rule of law as it applies to historic, publicly-owned national treasures. And, yes, I would feel better if the legally-appointed bureaucrats were allowed to do their jobs. Question: have you even looked at the model of this thing? It's hideous.
2) Don't throw up questions about who approved other, far more minor projects, most of which were smaller, indoor renovations or re-purposings of pre-existing space. Go look up the answers to your own questions and stop diverting.
3) Also stop diverting about Obama's library. Do I really need to point out it has nothing to do with demolishing a national landmark?
CDL is so transparent I can read a newspaper through him.
People who have worked with and for Trump know that Trump does not know how to work with architects and construction companies. PROFESSIONALS working for Trump dealt with the PROFESSIONALS on the construction side. Barbara Res has said that Trump doesn't know anything about construction and he just tells people to do stuff. Then, they go away and do their PROFESSIONAL construction jobs. She said that although he didn't learn anything about construction (others have said that Trump is too stupid to learn anything), he started to learn to listen to the experts that he hired. She also said that, as POTUS, he no longer hires "the best" and he just surrounds himself with yes-men. She also said that Trump is a racist and he instructed her to keep blacks out of sight on the construction projects: "I don't want people to think that the buildings are being built by black people." Trump spoke disparagingly and sexually about women. And on and on ...
http://www.c-span.org/program/washington-journal/barbara-res-on-tower-of-lies/586867
.
Res has said the Trump would sit around his office picking out fancy chandeliers and choosing fabric swatches for the casino and hotel furniture. THAT was Trump's BIG contribution to the construction projects. Any kid with Legos or woodblocks or Lincoln Logs probably knows more about construction technicalities than Trump.
.
Others have commented on Trump's lack of knowledge and actual STUPIDITY when it comes to architecture and construction. Trump insisted on architectural design of his casinos that experts told him would lead to failure. Trump ordered projects (casinos, Park Plaza, and MANY other projects) to be built HIS way; his casinos FAILED for the very reasons the architects and designers warned him about! He overbuilt and overborrowed and declared bankruptcy six times ... because he is a such a brilliant businessman who knows architecture and construction?????

...and getting thru the process than you think.
Ed Koch and the city of NY spent 6 years and $13 Million trying to fix an ice rink. They failed and said they had to start over and take 2 years. Trump said he'd have it done by the Holiday season and Mayor Koch had no choice but to call his bluff. Finished 2 months early (4 months to finish) and 25% under budget.
I think the new ballroom will be stunning, highly efficient with state of the art technology and done well before the deadline. The biggest threat to smooth development are unions and bureaucrats, he doesn't have to argue with either one on this project.
They have raised $1 billion. The library will cost $850 million.
COEUR-DE-LION is a liar.

You IGNORE the fact that every other President has sought and obtained approval of their requested renovations from the legally required commissions, etc., and gave consideration to the committee requests. Some of the articles I cited included the costs of some of the renovations / remodelings. Turning a basketball court back into the pre-existing tennis court in the same or better condition would be an easily achieved and low-cost endeavor. How are you going to reverse the Ballroom construction and restore the East Wing and the lawn?

"... Koch said while she supports building improved entertainment spaces at the White House, how the Trump administration went about the demolition was “distressing” as a historian. “It really demanded consultation, discussion and assurances for everybody that it would be done in the most sensitive possible way, respecting the building,” Koch said. “It is sad to see the outright destruction of it, rather than taking a thoughtful approach to replacing it.” "
.
I know from personal experience with other (smaller) historical renovations that historians given ample notice to go in and photograph and catalog the structure prior to demolition. They like to salvage relevant interior and exterior portions of the structure for display or archives and for future generations to acess.

When Trump tore down Bonwit Teller to make room for Trump Tower (5th Ave, NYC), he agreed to donate the famous Art Deco parts of the facade to the Metropolitan Museum of Art (the Met would pay the cost to transport them). After yanking their chain for many weeks, ***Trump ordered the Art Deco sculptures and grille DESTROYED***: "Trump later acknowledged he had personally ordered the destruction of the sculptures and grille. Trump said these "so-called Art Deco sculptures, which were garbage by the way," had been informally appraised by three different individuals [unverified] as "not valuable," and they had pegged the sculptures' value at $4,000 to $5,000. He also told the media that carefully removing the sculptures would have cost him an extra $500,000 and would have delayed his project. In a New York Magazine article in November 1980, Trump said the decor of his Grand Hyatt New York included "real art, not like the junk I destroyed at Bonwit Teller." " [There is contradictory testimony about Trump's CLAIMS about costs and delays and valuations. $500,000 in 1980 is approx $2 M in 2025. The sculptures and grille were ALREADY REMOVED on April 16, 1980! The Met was prepared to retrieve the pieces. But Trump ordered them destroyed. I'm not going to read all of the source articles but my recollection is that Trump ordered them to be JACKHAMMERED and smashed on site. I.e., Trump was and is dirty fucking liar.] This is the guy that CDL thinks paid for renovating Wollman Rink out of his own pocket! (A Trump Lie / Trump myth! NYC paid!)
.
Some skeptics have expressed the opinion that a remodeled bomb shelter will be used as a staging ground for Trump trying to remain in power after expiration of his term.
"... Once the balcony was completed, several of those who had opposed the project wrote to the President acknowledging that the balcony had in fact improved the south face of the Residence. ..."

And that is Trump LIED to the public about his intention to preserve, as much as possible, the East Wing, since he claimed he was aware of its historical significance. He even once declared that only four windows in the East Wing need to be removed to allow for a passage way to the "big, beautiful ballroom". I'm not aware of any of the other Presidents lying or intentionally misleading the public about his intentions. It allowed for public criticism, which is to be expected as with any construction/modification project. In Trump's case, the public was denied that opportunity, because Trump didn't give a rat's ass about what the public thought about his vanity project even though they owned property.
What about that, CDL? You're the self-proclaimed renovation expert who knows all about construction and remodeling, and supposedly reviewed the architectural plans. How is it you weren't able to discern that the entire East Wing would need to be demolished, i.e. it wasn't going act as a segue into the $300 million ballroom? Was it because you couldn't believe Trump would lie to the American public?
Really, I'm just looking for something to Bitch about so I can get my daily dose of blue Gooo to feed the TDS itch!
