after all, immigration is the sincerest form of flattery.
As for the threats to leave, sadly, they're probably empty. I cordially invite those who feel this way to do so. It will be no loss.
So I will be renoucing my American Citizenship, and taking my income, and my conscience, and my ethics to live somewhere in the CIVILIZED world.
The U.S. is an empire in decline. I will leave it to the likes of G.W.Bush, Bribite, RLTW, and James86. Good riddance. I'm outta here
I still might. They all voted for Bush. I still don't know how I'm going to deal with them.
I feel sad that you feel compelled to do that. It is never easy to make yourself an orphan. I hope the life you have will ultimately be better.
I understand how devastated you feel, and how infuriated you are now with the majority. I committed myself to this election. Seven hundred dollars, and hours of volunteering.
It is definitely easier to get away before everything we value in this country is destroyed, but if the US fails, as it is doing now, it will not be easy anywhere. The world we live in now resembles the one between the two world wars. Given the growing environmental problems, the higher population, and the vast improvement in weapon technology since that time, humanity may not have another chance to get it right.
However, I know you are not leaving because it is easier. Go if that best expresses your outrage. Yes, it is a devastating defeat, but there are 56 million people who voted against Bush. That is a huge minority, and it's still capable of a lot.
Remember those of us fighting gravity here. I wish you good luck, and a better, freer world, despite my worst misgivings, no matter where you go.

I hope it's not France! But after a while you will miss not being here, so my guess is that you will be back (if indeed you ever leave). With the possible exception of Australia, you will find that most of the world outside America is a pretty ugly place. Why do you think that the rest of the world always wants to come here?

Mainly, the rest of the world has wanted to come here for economic opportunity. I have made enough money to retire in most places, so I don't need that. In fact, given the cost of living in Costa Rica, I could retire with quite an affluent lifestyle.
And, BTW, escorts there are beautiful, plentiful, economical and legal.
Although I doubt your sincerity
one less vote for the socialist democraps to worry about in 2008

Ststud, thank you for your work in drawing the line in the sand in this country. Due to your hatefulled diatribes, repeated by democratic leaders (like yourself) all over this country, your ideology was exposed and soundly defeated!
I understand Havana and Pyongyang are both lovely this time of year! And as a bonus, in both places your politics, ethics and values will be embraced!
Hasta la bye bye.
Currently, there is no denying that the big mass of red states in the heartland of this country KNEW what it was voting for in electing Bush in 2004. It's indicative that the red states don't include any of the more educated, and more affluent areas of the nation, but they certainly DO include the majority of voters. They have spoken. And what they said is, quite simply this:
1) We don't give a crap about what the rest of the world thinks of us, we only care about ourselves
2) We think that our brand of religion is more important than secular knowledge (this is generally a symptom of an empire in decline throughout world history).
This is exactly what happened when the populations of Italy, Germany, and Japan allowed their advanced nations to embark on a path of international bullying based upon self-righteous arrogance and imperialism prior to WWII. IMHO, there are only two possible choices for me - to either leave, or to work as a revolutionary to overthrow the government. Frankly, I'm just to self-interested to choose the revolutionary path, although, if my parents were not alive, I would probably give it serious consideration.
As for where I'm going, It's unclear, but I am currently considering Costa Rica, Canada, and several european countries. The only way I would consider coming back is if some of the blue states on the electoral map were to make a serious bid at secession from the union. A worthwhile goal now, IMHO, and one which some serious talk is now starting.
The fact is, I do not believe that Democracy as it is practiced in the U.S. at present is worth saving.
I'd certainly rather die than live out the rest of my life in a nation where the likes of James86, Bribite, and Snowman39 represent the majority of the populace. But that's what we now have in the U.S.
Fortunately for me, I can afford to do this, even if I never earn another dime, or peso, or whatever, in the rest of my life. I am quite certain that others are not so fortunate.
The US is still not comparable to Germany, Japan or Italy in the 1930s.
Even if it were, I'd still be staying. Fleeing may be necessary to save your life, but it finally just gives your enemies a border.
Good luck, again, to you and all the others who've decided to uproot because of the results of this election.

I'm still waiting for Krystalnacht or the jackbooted quasi-criminal , political elite bullies. So far, we have nothing of the sort. Though the underground rumor campaign Bush started against McCain in the South Carolina primaries of 2000 gives me pause. It does show that the network for such already exists.
Right now, I'll just say that Bush is the first Latin American president of the US. (In terms of the benighted form of government his brought to us, not for anything of that culture.) He lacks the ideological depth of a Hitler or a Mussilini. Not to say he can't get that, or the next guy the Republicans run won't have it.
