Takes on several items...

1) Effects on the election
You can argue both sides here, through my conservative glasses I see this helping Romney because it will not be the rallying cry for the election. So many thought it would be thrown out by the court that they did not give it much thought. Now that it is uphead, the only hope the right has is through legislation. Since the bill is unpopular with many undecided voters, I see this could be a plus for him.

2) The future of health care.
Like I said in an earlier post, the 1% are not affected, they will be able to go whereever they wish to seek the best healthcare. However, while I see more people covered, I see a decline in the quality of healthcare and the eventual natural rationing which will have to occur. Now that payments will start to be more controlled (and do not fool yourself, with this system we will soon be at single payer), fewer people will move into the medical profession. Who wants to go to college for 12 years, do a 3 year residency and take on a lot of college debt if there is no payday at the end of the road. The lack of doctors will lead to rationing and eventually we will have to lower the standards to get more doctors into the system. This will lead to an influx of doctors from other countries whose training would not pass muster in todays standards. End of the day, you are seeing a less qualified doctor.

So, what are everyone else's take on this?

The Supreme Court just allowed the Congress and/or the President to dictate what you can or can't,  or must or must not, purchase without penalty.

How soon will it be before Obama/ Congress demands all Americans to buy:
1. a General Motors electric car or pay a "tax"
2. renewable energy sources for your home or pay a "tax"
3. buy a gym membership to be "healthy" or pay a "tax"
4. eat what food they tell you to eat or pay a "tax"

and the list goes on....

I don't know your age, but when Roosevelt started SSA and Medicare they were very unpopular.

I've  had conversations with very bright Republicans and Democrats and many of them  don't know anything about the ACA, and some of them are MDs.

GOP and their lobbyists outspent Democrats 3 to 1 to discredit ACA.

Most  people don't  appreciate what it does,  just like SSA and Medicare when they  were passed years ago.  GPO kept Congress from phasing it in for the most part until  2014 as you know.

People who are taking advantage of it for the most part what they can now access are very appreciative of it.

22 million will not be covered even with the ACA.  I'll save you some  trouble. Romney isn't going  to get elected, and he couldn't repeal ACA anyway. Neither could the Tea Party dominated House.

Insurance comapnies are going to throw their lobbying money toward ACA because it makes them money with the  mandate.

You have to have people who aren't making sizable claims in the pool for insurance companies to be able to accept people without pre-existing conditions, and they'll still raise rates.

A few more quick points:

You said that (and my state needs more of them) people will stop applying to med schools and you mentioned residency.  I may not know as much about medicine as you do (I don't know) but I am an MD and I did 6 years of residency.

I  get an awful lot of medical journals that have addressed the ACA like NEJM.  I also have seen a lot of patients--8 years ER and more years than I'm going to tell you in primary care.

1) 67% of 4600 physicians surveyed by AMA--I can  link this if you need it approve the entire ACA.
2) Two Republican mantras are terrible.  One is insurance across state lines. Talk to anyone and they'll tell you that would lower standards for health  insurance to make it screw millions of people.
3) Robert Wood Johnson studied lowering malpractice caps. Texas is a state that has done this the most.  Lowering the caps is good for us the physicians because on average it lowers our malpractice premiums 19%.  But it does nothing for our patients--and one of them would  probably be you unless you are both an MD and a patient.

So those two things GOP pushes, don't work.  Google Robert Wood Johnson malpractice cap study and you'll see the proof.

We do have a shortage of physicians in most states, and one of the reasons is that insurance companies have become a big hasssle. If we bill very routine services now, some of them hold up reimbursement just to make us spend more time  collecting it.

ACA is going to help an awful lot of people.  Many Republican voters hate it because they hate African Americans and they are bigots.  The Teaparty rallies weren't people with the kind of education I'd want for my kids, and hopefully that you'd want for yours.

I will enjoy getting my popcorn to watch Romney who right  now is afraid to take any questions from entities other than Fox and Friends thrash around.  John Boehner and his merry Teaparty gang as well.

Right now I know several women  who have metastatic breast cancer who have been thrown into bankruptch with their medical bills.  And Genetech came out with a very  promising break  through drug last week.  We will progress significantly against breast cancer in the next few years, and I want these women and their families to be able to afford the new meds.

Very disappointing however

if you point out what annoys you I'll try to respond.  I want health care to be more accessable and to get better. I'm really tired of having to battle advanced disease that was treated randomly in ERs instead of by consistent high quality care that  would have stopped its  progression.
The ACA brings physicians and patients together--it does not get between doctor and patient.

The more Romney talks, the dumber he is for somoene who graduated with an MBA and law degree from Harvard.
and I'm  sick and tire of hearing that lowering malpractice caps will lower insurance because that's been proven  to be ridiculous. Texas has the most agressive caps in the country and second to California partly because of population it has the least access to medical care in numbers for kids and adults.

What lowering caps will do is reduce my premiums by 19% but it won't  lower insurance premiums for families or individuals.

Insurance across state lines--anyone who knows anything about health insurance knows that all states have minimum requirements--across state lines would allow insurance companies to screw millions of Americans.

Again if you tell me what annoys you specifically, and I can stop annoying you I would.

But if  it's my ideas, I'm not going to support keeping health care from people or lowering taxes for the very affluent on the backs of the poor and middle class or bigotry that doesn't want a black President in the White House.

Does Mr. Golfer have a significant issue that's political that you'd like to discuss in an adult manner? Do you want to tell me what that is?  I'd be happy when I can get here to do that with you. I can do that.

The nanosecond I posted here anything at all serious, well written, and tried to have an intelligent argument about a week ago,  and tried to have civil discourse I was flamed with the usual bullshit insults. Perhaps that resulted in me spiking the ball.  It means a lot to me  that a parent of a child with a significant disease will now be covered. It means a lot to me that women with breast cancer now will have additional avenues of coverage.  It means a helluva  lot that Americans with  pre-existing serious conditions will be covered. I still worry about the 26 million people who won't be covered. I'm not convinced insurance premiums have been attacked the way they would have if we had had the public option or single payer for all.
We should have had a public option. We may still.

I have not seen anyone here who says medical care will suffer under the ACA state with any specificity or supporting authority how they arrived at this conclusion.

Many  of us have suffered through having our patients have to decide between food and necessities and their medications. More of them will have coverage.  Come 2014 and years after, the ACA will take its place besides SSA and Medicare as helpful to Americans.

I lament that the administration hasn't had the money that GOP Billionaires have had to trash this legislature and spread pandemic ignorance.  I have yet to see anyone from GOP here who has a basic grasp of the ACA.  I'm happy to help them get a grasp.

You're  dead wrong about the  ACA opinion impacting the election. It  impacts it hugely. Cantor and Boehner are only going  to hurt themselves with their imbecilic repeal effort.  And the Senate won't let that happen nor will the administration.

Now that  ACA is law, and it's not going  to be overturned in your lifetime, people will begin to  learn what it does for them and what it doesn't.  It helps a huge number of people.  It does not hurt small business. And the campaigns to shift public opinion will shift to smearing Obama, and they will  lose but the country will win.

Hi  Hannah--

Thanks for asking an intelligent question  about an  issue instead of the usual 5 year-old level  flames and mud slinging here.  The little boys want  to impress the girls because they think that will somehow get them laid better.

The common GOP meme has been (and it's verbatim repeated by every  Republican office holder because they have centralized emailing to stay  on message) is that insurance across state lines would lower premiums, and to use what  Romney has parroted, "create laboratories for democracy."

Every bill that has been written to get this done Hannah, or policy that has discussed thishas a strong provision in it to allow states to abandon any standards. For example, you're  in Georgia.  In order for health care policies to be marketed, they have to include certain minimum standards of coverage that protects you when you have a serious illness where costs mount quickly.

Every idea, policy or bill that the GOP has advanced  to sell across state lines gets rid of any minimum standards that Georgia  or any  other state has, and they all have them--some states better than others. Those standards offer some protection for you so that your insurance policy will cover most major illnesses in some reasonable fashion. They are minimal however.  

So any bills to get insurance across state lines throws out requirements for minimum coverage standards, and you would absolutely have policies that are close to worthless and people would be ripped off if they bought them.  States wouldn't be able to set standards for plans like they do now, and insurance rates would  even  go higher.

The ACA (which  I  like  to call Romney Care because that's what he fought for in Massachusetts when he was governor) and you'll see his speeches for it now all over TV until November, doesn't do very much to lower the cost of insurance for people who are well, but it  sure does for people with pre-existing conditions.  The insurance companies were very much for the individual mandate and had the  Supreme Court  shot down the ACA, they had plans in place  to really jack up rates.

Another common myth is  that if we had malpractice caps in every state it would lower the  cost of insurance.  Nothing could be further from the truth. Texas has the most aggessive malpractice caps--limits of what docs can be sued for.  That has  lowered the cost of malpractice insurance for  docs in  Texas, and states that have done this 19.5% (Robert Wood Johnson Foundation did the largest study) but it hasn't lowered the cost for patients a cent.  Texas along with California has the worst access to medical care for kids and adults of any of the states.


One cause near and dear to me and a lot of people who see sick people is that women with breast cancer often get immediately dropped from their coverage and they end  up with painful metastases and bankruptcy.  The companies don't want to pay for the new meds that can keep these women alive like Genetech's Perjeta used with Herceptin to keep women  with metastatic breast cancer alive  hopefully for years. Perjeta wholesales at 6 grand a month, and  Herceptin at $4500 and a typical 18 month course costs around $190,000. Insurance companies don't want to pay for these drugs that these women need.

I know enough about medicine, in as much as which medical issues concern me. My medical costs, as a MA resident, have multiplied fourfold in the past five years. Not because of my insurers, not because of my physical condition, but because of "government."

I am not sure if you are serious about your last comment but that is what it comes down to, knowing that you have the liberty to disagree and not comply with laws that infringe on your liberties.

People fret about a law taking their guns away - a law is a piece of paper, that cannot take your guns away - a person has to physically come and take your guns away and you have to agree to give them up.

32 per day, (he probably squeezes them in in 15 min blocks) x 5 days = 160/week

160 x 50 work weeks/ yr.  = 8,000/yr.

300,000 total patients / 8,000 patients/yr = 37.5 years of practice.

My guess is, the ass you pulled the 8 patients per day out of is the one under Jeffy's nose, am I close?

You do yourself no favors with the thread you started with and only make yourself look silly. You might be surprised, but the are certain parts of the bill I think many conservatives agree with in principal, but just disagree on the implementation.
