Even if the CBS documents are forgeries, their content has not been contested

CBS's argument is built upon the pillars of those documents.  You take away those pillars, their house of cards falls.

IMHO, CBS has got some balls trying to make that argument.  I don't know of anyone that is objective that would buy that.

since it appears that agrkej is really Dan Rather!!

After all, only Rather or a far Lefty could excuse fraud on this basis.  And again, I repeat: GWB's honorable discharge is the official government record which adequately refutes the content of CBS's allegations.  And if they don't, why has CBS failed to give equal time to the far more substantial criticism of Kerry leveled by the Swiftboat Vets for Truth, which are also contrary to official government reports?

RLMAO

I was wondering who actually bought Dan Rather's rant about President Bush answering these forgeries, and I'm not surprised to see agrkej being one of them.

You intellectual lefties are good for one thing, comic relief!

I think, gentlemen, that you need to read the various citations.  The mateiral CBS was given quite well may be forged, that portion of the story is yet to be completely proven either way, although I for one think it was not real.  But ALL the OTHER evidence DOES support the story that Bush wasa a total shirker in uniform.  It's actually more damning than any of Clinton's efforts to evade the draft.

Other officers recall his avoidance of drill and skipping medical appts. The Harvard Professor 's conversations with him left little doubt that he relied heavily on his connections to avoid actual service at every opportunity.

This is clearly why Rove put his ambush of CBS into action, to give the easily misled (you guys and other knee jerk reactionaries) a stick to fight the OVERWHELMING torrent of information that paints Bush as "a guy born on third who thinks he hit a triple" and a serious cad.  Otherwise the few among you who are rational on this point might begin to doubt your golden boy.

The "CBS papers" were not the core of the case made.  They were the icing on the cake, the final damning proof, the gild to the lily.  As such, their possible lack of authenticity DOES NOT put the lie to the rest of the story, but rather serves to attract more attention as we try to figure out why M. Rove felt threatened by the original tale enough to take another of his devious actions?  Clearly it had teeth enough.

That said, I only use the Guard story when pointing out that one served and the other DID NOT, and to question W's glee at putting the real men who DO SERVE in harm's way for NO REAL REASON (In Iraq, few question Afghanistan as a campaign)when he clearly would cut at the first shell himself.  What these two men did 30 years ago has no other bearing on this present struggle.  Clinton was a fine president w/o a service history, and agonized over every use of force enough for two presidents.

Of course the official government record says that Kerry earned a Silver Star, a Bronze Star and 3 Purple Hearts, so by your reasoning the allegations of the Swiftboat Vets are completely refuted.  Why then were they given so much media exposure even after their star witness and their only member that actually served on Kerr's boat, Stephen Gardner, admitted that "he was not on the boat with Kerry during the incidents for which Kerry got his medals," as reported by The Columbus Dispatch on August 6? And as a guest on Michael Savage's radio show, Savage Nation, on August 2, Gardner said that of Kerry's three Purple Hearts, he could only attest to the first; Gardner later admitted to Savage that he was "not on the boat with him [Kerry]" when that injury occurred.

ABC News:

[Retired Col. Walter Staudt, who was brigadier general of Bush's unit in Texas, interviewed Bush for the Guard position and retired in March 1972. He was mentioned in one of the memos allegedly written by Lt. Col. Jerry Killian as having pressured Killian to assist Bush, though Bush supposedly was not meeting Guard standards.

"I never pressured anybody about George Bush because I had no reason to," Staudt told ABC News in his first interview since the documents were made public.

The memo stated that "Staudt is pushing to sugar coat" a review of Bush's performance.

Staudt said he decided to come forward because he saw erroneous reports on television. CBS News first reported on the memos, which have come under scrutiny by document experts who question whether they are authentic. Killian, the purported author of the documents, died in 1984.

Staudt insisted Bush did not use connections to avoid being sent to Vietnam.

"He didn't use political influence to get into the Air National Guard," Staudt said, adding, "I don't know how they would know that, because I was the one who did it and I was the one who was there and I didn't talk to any of them."

‘Highly Qualified’

During his time in charge of the unit, Staudt decided whether to accept those who applied for pilot training. He recalled Bush as a standout candidate.

"He was highly qualified," he said. "He passed all the scrutiny and tests he was given."

Staudt said he never tried to influence Killian or other Guardsmen, and added that he never came under any pressure himself to accept Bush. "No one called me about taking George Bush into the Air National Guard," he said. "It was my decision. I swore him in. I never heard anything from anybody."]

Just another meme.
