Critics call for Donald Trump to be 'impeached' as he makes awkward tariff blunder

Critics have declared US president Donald Trump should be 'impeached for stupidity' following an awkward tariff blunder.

Trump spoke at the National Republican Congressional Committee's (NRCC) annual fundraising dinner in Washington on Tuesday (April 8) where he commented on the 104% levy imposed on goods from China. The president said the US had been "ripped [...] off left and right" by other countries for long enough, declaring: "Now it's our turn to do the ripping."

"Right now, China is paying a 104% tariff," he said. "Now, it sounds ridiculous, but they charged us for many items 100%, 125%. Many countries have."

But social media users were quick to point out the additional cost incurred by the tariff on Chinese imports were likely to be paid by American consumers. Ed Krassenstein, creator and co-host of the podcast KrassenCast, wrote on X: "Wrong Mr. Trump.

"China isn't paying a 104% Tariff. Americans are paying it. If you still think China is paying it then you should be impeached for stupidity."

In a follow-up post, he added: "It will essentially cost US companies and individuals twice as much to buy something from China."

Last week, the President imposed levies hitting some Chinese goods with tariffs of 34%. It came as Trump suffers a mental collapse after a 'senile' moment on stage in the middle of a speech. Officials in Beijing responded with like-for-like measures.

Trump then added an extra 50% levy, totalling 104%, unless China agreed to withdraw its 34% tariff. China's commerce ministry accused the US of "economic bullying," adding it would "fight to the end" against Trump's measures.

According to the Census Bureau, the US imported $438.9billion worth of Chinese goods last year. Experts predict around $418billion in additional costs could be passed on to American consumers in 2025 the tariffs remain in place and imports stay roughly flat.

Some Trump supporters pointed out ways in which China would feel the lofty tariffs. The high cost of imported goods will likely disincentivize Americans from purchasing them, which, proponents argue, could see consumers reaching for US-made items instead.

"Wrong, Ed," one person told Krassenstein. "The tariffs are strategically designed to hit China where it hurts while bringing jobs back home. Americans are winning, and the left's whining won't change that."

"Tariffs don't exist in a vacuum," said another. "When foreign manufacturers lose access to the US market unless they pay a premium, they move production here to avoid the cost. That means jobs, factories, and investment land in America instead of overseas."

"And if they do, how are they going to meet the demand of raw materials," retorted a third person. "There's a reason those are imported as even the domestic material industry can't meet the demand."

However, US consumers are clearly concerned about price hikes. Speaking to the BBC, Floridian Catherine Foster, 58, said: "I'm probably a couple of years away from retiring and I don't know if I'm going to be able to... Trump is not a king and I feel like our congress and senate is letting us down, both parties, by not pushing back."

China isn't the only country impacted by Trump's levies. Roughly 60 countries branded the "worst offenders" by the US President are affected, with tariffs coming into effect today.

These include the EU, with 20% tariffs, and nations like Vietnam and Cambodia which will receive a 46% and 49% levy respectively. "These countries are calling us up, kissing my a** to negotiate deals on tariffs," Trump said.
