As such, China has a right to establish its own policies in light of the value (and strategic value) of NOT depleting its easily-tapped reserves of vital rare-earth minerals.

The U.S. is a sovereign nation as well, and if our politicians had any sense, our trade policies would favor OUR long term best interests as Americans rather than the stock price of various companies.

This problem was brewing for the past 20 years. It happened because China shut down everyone one else by undercutting in price. There is plenty of earth minerals in the US, S Africa, Brazil, India, etc. All mines shut down in the US. S Africa, Brazil and India still have operating mines because they controlled Chinese imports and didn't business greed over take their national interest.

In the long run this is great news because....

...2 companies in the U.S, one in colorado , one in cali (i think) have just re-opened their earth mineral mines because of this & are creating U.S. jobs. they had closed them down because it was cheaper to buy from china. another mine in australia has re-opened as well, between the 3, it's 33% of the world’s known earth minerals.

this may eventually back fire on china's emerging middle class growing economy...when they want imports they do not possess from other competing nations.
