As a result the solution may be different than in other places. New York, for example, had 386 murders in 2023 but very few were gang-related. Murders are down sharply this year.

It's Birmingham, AL at almost 60 murders per 100,000 population. So why hasn't Trump marched his military into this deep South city and "cleaned it up"? By comparison, Chicago is at less than 18 murders per 100,000.

Even though Birmingham has a higher murder rate per person, that number doesn’t tell the whole story. Chicago has way more murders overall (about 570 compared to Birmingham’s 140) and the bigger number means more people are affected.

Chicago’s police are stretched thin trying to handle all that violence in such a big, crowded city. I am not advocating this position, but the National Guard could help much more where the problem is biggest and hardest to manage.

Birmingham, being smaller, might do better with increased local police and community programs instead. So, the murder rate alone is not the best way to decide as I would argue that looking at total murders, and the city’s capacity to handle them, matters as well.

As a result the solution may be different than in other places. New York, for example, had 386 murders in 2023 but very few were gang-related. Murders are down sharply this year.
