Estes sells rockets and planes and has for some time now. Could you put one together to deliver a payload? My guess is yup. all it takes is a little high school physics and a modest amount of cash.
the technology has been there for a long time. The question is, why hasn't it been a problem yet?
Any guesses? Mine would be that the % of people so inclined and able are pretty damn low; that the payload is relatively limited, and such a project is fairly vulnerable to detection, both before and after launch - even if we have little in place now. These would have to have nuke warheads, and be launched from a very close distance to avoid intercept.
Our inclination would be to focus on people who have behaved badly, ie chase down and catch bin Laden, et al, rather than get off on distractions with speculative connection to the problem.
We know, absolutely humorless. Some people think it's so funny to see skyscrapers collapse, but we're not in on the joke yet.
it is mankind's use of technology that puts a moral "spin" on technology.
What most forget, is that the mastermind of 9-11 is a highly intelligent, well-educated person. In short - a civil engineer who could probably calculate with some degree of accuracy the results of flying a plane into the trade tower.
We all laughed at McGiver. But know what boys and girls? it is truly freightening what you can do with simple common materials. Why do I care about open borders? cause of that simple fact.
Does anyone of us feel safer? Than we did on 9-12? I don't. When will I feel safer? When the need to have a group to hate becomes a relic of the human condition. We are not there yet.
shortly after 9/11, a piper cub accidentally flew into an Atlanta skyscraper, and hardly did more than break windows.
Given the size of robot a/c, they would have to be armed with nuke warheads do serious damage. Maintaining something like Tomahawks requires incredible infrastructure that should be easily detected if it's done within range of the USA.
Yes, suitcase nukes are possible. But again, they require a lot of technical knowledge and infrastructure. And just as these are possible, it's also possible to see them easily from the air, or for a cop or coast guardsman to notice one being launched.
It seems much more likely that a terrorist would use some sort of passive delivery system, eg shipping a nuke to a refinery, and letting it go off. Or, use biological agents.
And of course, we have had 3 major attacks on bldgs in the USA, and several on bldgs outside the USA. All excepting 9/11 were truck bombs; and 2 in the US were muslim extremists who came legally to the USA, and 1 was a native US citizen. If we wanted to stop terrorists, it seems like illegal entries are the lowest risks.
We suspect that the annual cost of crime in the US far exceeds the cost of the 9/11 attack. Not nearly as exciting, but something to consider. There are many risks, including hurricanes & asteroids, and our problem is our priorities.
Seriously, one could build a few Estes rockets, payload them with C-4, and go to Baytown or Bator Rouge, or for heaven's sake NJ and basically shut down oil refinery in the US.
Not hard to do. Other examples? they are there.
WRT biologicals, dispersion is the problem - however, things like nerve gas work well in a closed confined area.
more expamples? plenty exist. My fave? attack on the web.
