Fauci was being circumspect ... but that said your triangulation of two reports are very striking and credit should be given where it belongs.
Now to answer your question: I don’t think being cautious/ on both sides of error - is a terminable offense, in my opinion. If he was intentionally misleading - then it is a terminable offense. In my assessment he was not misleading.

Liberals here, and everywhere pretty much, are arguing that Trump didn't act soon enough. That critique is only valid if he WASN'T listening to his experts.
It makes zero sense to blame Trump when he was following the direct advice of his CV task force, a group which liberals have roundly praised profusely.
Dems cant have it both ways. They cant tell us Fauci is a genius and an expert one moment and then tell us Trump should NOT have listened to his advice the next.

Trump is a politician and Fauci is a doctor so they have different roles and responsibilities. And just for clarity, Trump didnt call CV itself a hoax, like many libs have reported erroneously.
He was referring to the Dems criticism of him botching the response to it, as a hoax. Slight word changes, but drastically different meanings.
Context and accuracy is important, as I am sure you would agree.

Scientists: should augment science for good of humanity. Minimize error to the best of their ability. Scientists not required to lead.
Politician: should augment quality of life of his constituency. Maximize social good of his or her constituents. They must lead especially in the time of crisis.
BOTH are not expected to lie, but any can do mistakes.
JFK, Churchill, Reagan etc. were politicians and leaders. They lied sometimes but always took responsibility and led their countries through need to their best.
Trump is not a politician nor a leader. He is an opportunist that will do ANYTHING to maximize his interest. He fails in both roles. So one cannot asses him as a politician.
Fauci should be responsible to science, any president should be responsible for his country.
