Do you think abortion or the death penalty is more likely to be overturned by the court within our lifetime?

but if I had to pick one, it would be abortion. If the dems don't get there act together and win a presidential election sometime soon, the right will continue to pack the supreme court with justices that pass their litmus test of "right to life" or "anti choice" depending on how you look at it.

Cmon dems, get your act together, we need a lefty prez every once in a while to protect us from the rabid religious right. More important than abortion, there's that little thing called the "Bill of Rights" that may just get lost in our fervor to protect ourselves from the terrorists.

and conversely the death penalty will be reinforced as more and more Enemies of the State are summarily executed.

Then they'll start coming after the rest of us who don't fit the mold.

"If Roe vs Wade is overturned Californianians and other labor  needy states won't have to hire illegal aliens to do their work."

And if people of your mindset have their way, all illegal aliens would be expelled from the USA. Who will willingly take their place at the bottom of the labor food chain? You? The welfare parasites? Maybe some former Enron middle managers?

Quad, there are a number of people on this board with whom I disagree, and often. But among these fine folks are several I'd just as soon share a drink and a laugh with as argue politics. I've even given BillKile a ride on my trike and didn't chide him for sitting on the right side.

I sometimes wonder if the overturn of Roe v Wade might not be a blessing in disguise.

One of the most pointless and divisive political issues of my lifetime would be removed from the federal political agenda.  IMHO, a distinct plus.

If you believe some of the commentary on this topic, the issue would be returned to the states, where, prior to 1973, the trend had been distinctly in favor or liberalizing access to abortion.  Even that demi-god of the right, Ronald Reagan, managed as Cali governor to sign into law a very liberal abortion law in the late 1960s [before finding "votes" - er, excuse me, religion on this issue.  Really bad pun intended].  My own state, NY, in 1970 enacted an abortion law which essentially removed all but the most niggling restrictions on  access to that procedure.  Yes, some state would enact restrictive abortion legislation, and that is unfortunate as hell, but that's a byproduct of federalism.  As always, the poor and the ignorant and the immobile would bear the brunt of this -- so what's new under the sun?

And again, an overturn of Roe v Wade really means the rejection of the logic and legal reasoning of that decision. States which since 1973 have enacted liberalized abortion laws would still have those laws in effect. [An overturn of Roe v Wade is not the same thing as a constitutional amendment banning abortion, which is the real if unlikely nightmare scenario here.]  Nothing would prevent other cases from percolating their way through the the federal judiciary. In spite of nutty federal judges nominated and confirmed by the right, i'm willing to put more faith in judicial independence and an adherence to precedent than most]. And who knows?  A sounder legal basis for access to abortion could be [but I'm not holding my breath] the really long term result.  We've been beating this issue to death since 1973 -- and it's almost 2008.  35 years of a lot of sound and fury signifying...?

As for your sggestion that Enemies of the State will be summarily executed, I'll just good-naturedly flag that one with an Over The Top warning label and trust you will accept it in the spirit with which I have offered it.

But, it would simply be replaced by fifty separate state battles. We'll see peace in the middle east before this country comes to an agreement on the abortion issue.

Actually doc I couldn't care less about being treated with respect from you..The first time I saw your pompous ass you were immediately disrespectful just like most white trash. I don't like you and I don't expect you to like me..I remember you well from the Ter chat boards..You were The big mouth bore who tried to dominate the chat with politics and belittle every one who disagreed with you.It was too hard to talk about sex with your twisted political  mind on there so I left.. In my opinion you are a frieking idiot with your "who will do the work mindset"...let me ask you something...Who did the work before the 80s invasion of illegals??...ILLEGALS =NO   LEGAL IMMIGRATION = YES   ..... Or have  californians always depended on illegals to do their hard labor?

When the government was murdering american indians It put the picture of an indian and a buffolo on a nickel. The nickel to show how much the government honered them. By repealing abortion and the death penalty it proports to honor life. And therefore is able to kill someone somewhere. Peace keepers are war starters. The freedom act takes away freedom. We originally went to Irac to stop that madman from torturing the people there. Just check the original news clips. Now we can't get Mukacy to go on record that even waterboarding is wrong.
