The original US Constitution allowed states to determine requirements for voting. Most states limited voting to land-owning white males, ~6% of the total population at that time.

At no time were votes or electors allocated according to land area. One vote from a white male who owned one acre counted the same as one vote from a male who owned 100,000 acres. On TV show Bonanza, Ben Cartwright owned the 640,000 acre Ponderosa.
