So is the NRA a tacitly racist organization too?

I don't like to "race bait" and I am normally on the opposite side of these kind of debates, but I find myself agreeing with both Phillip Smith, who leads the National African American Gun Association and The National Review’s David French, both of whom were quoted in the attached article.

I am sure Jack is going to disagree with me on this one, but whether or not the shooting was justified (I vote it was NOT) the NRA almost always takes the side of law abiding gun owners. Their silence on this case raises some serious questions about an organization that is constantly hitting me up for more money.

Forget the jury's acquittal for just a second, juries get things wrong all the time. Forget the fact that the cop is being let go by his department in spite of the acquittal, a pretty good sign even his bosses know it was a "bad shoot" at best, but the NRA's silence on this really is deafening. Does anyone feel like defending the NRA on this one? I know I don't.

though they are probably racist, too.  So they win the Daily Double. That said, it's worth noting the cop was Hispanic, for whatever that's worth.  Bottom line, the cop panicked and should have lost more than his job.

Since we are leaving the law off the table.

I haven't heard lefties making the argument that citizens SHOULD have the right to carry.

If the left was more supporting of the right to carry, more blacks COULD exercise their right's.

In America the gun laws are more strict where the constituency is predominantly black, and under Democrat rule.

We use a jury system. You and I weren't there to hear all the evidence and look at the witnesses live and in person. The jury did and they decided 12-0 in favor of acquittal with two of the jurists being African American.

The cop being let guy is NOT a sign that his bosses "know it was a bad shoot." The cop in Ferguson, whom you backed 100% and was shown not to have done anything wrong, lost his job as well. His bosses defended to the hilt that it was a "good shoot."

Many PD's fire PO's after perfectly "good shoots" for PR reasons and to bring the temperature down in the room.

2nd degree murder? Perhaps that was an overreach on the part of the DA, but I doubt I will ever be convinced the response of the cop can be justified.

One other thing to keep in mind, it's the jurors that don't always get a chance to hear ALL the evidence. They get to hear the evidence that the judge allows them to hear and often they don't get to hear some of the most relevant facts.

Your response does give credence to Jakes assertion that the NRA is more "pro LE" than "racist" I still believe the NRA should have been more vocal on this as the guy was either shot for "being black" or for being a "law abiding gun owner" both possibilities are quite disturbing IMHO.

If you don't, then you are making a larger point about shoots in general and not about this specific case. As you are well aware, the jury is instructed to consider only the facts that pertain to this case, not how any other case may have turned out.

Your assertion that there was only two possibilities in this case:; "the guy was either shot for "being black" or for being a "law abiding gun owner" is just ridic to me.

You have completely ruled out even the possibility that the cop was reasonably afraid of his own life being taken? How?

Remember, the tox report came back and found high levels of THC in his system. He was DUI. She admitted they smoked before they got in the car and was high.

Does that evidence give you pause as to how Castile might not have been able to follow the cops demands or does it give you confidence that it was a "bad shoot"? Come on, GaG.

This is a sober "he said" versus an intoxicated and discredited "she said" case.

And you want a conviction with this evidence?

Black racist on this one, in an earlier post he said that some folks shouldn't be cops and the kid clearly panicked and overreacted.  The question is, what punishment is most appropriate in this case and I believe some substantial punishment is called for but the folks whose vote matters, Jurors, didn't see it that way

Calling organizations and people racist without evidence has made the word meaningless these days.  Chicken-Little shit.

Kids today throw that word around for any minor disagreement - who'd they learn that from?

...I am agreeing with G.A.G. twice in a short time but I believe the most blatant offence that the officer committed  was firing 7  45 caliber rounds in rapid succession into the passenger compartment of a car containing an innocent woman & a child. Anyone who has ever shot a 45 caliber automatic hand gun know's how much kick-back you get from rapidly discharging a 45, it is indeed fortunate the women & child weren't hit because Philando was only hit 5 times & this officer definitely needlessly endangered the passenger & the child.

Does seven shots from point blank range sound like a "measured response" to you? Keeping in mind of course that Castille didn't "surprise" the cop by "pulling a gun" but told him calmly in advance before doing any reaching of any kind that he had a licensed weapon in the car.

I have been pulled over by the cops before with a loaded weapon in my car, and never did the cop ever come close to freaking out like this cop did. Maybe it's because Asians aren't as feared as blacks are by the cops? I really don't know as it's hard to prove a negative.

As I am sure that point was hammered home by the prosecution.

What you and I may think as "measured," is irrelevant while we are arm chair quarterbacking this and not actually in harms way.

The IRL position the cop is in where he may only have a fraction of a second to decide if he dies or Castile dies is the key point that I am sure the jury struggled with.

Look, the only eyewitness other than the cop was the GF and she was high and a disaster, on many levels. So much so that her own mother criticized her to the press just after the shooting.

My guess is she severely hampered the prosecution with all her baggage.

Maybe, just maybe, they considered all the evidence presented to them and all you did was read a few articles and saw the GF fb video to proclaim him guilty?

Let me know how many bullets you would fire, if you are faced with the insane split second decision to shoot or possibly be killed yourself. Would you have been happier with 3? 4? Let us all know the exact number when you find a minute.

Lets hope you are never in that situation but our police are, on a day in and day out basis, and with all things being equal, they tend to side with LE in these cases.

This was never a good case for the prosecution. Shit, you even had the prosecutor saying good things about the officer afterwards.

...Well jack the two African American members of the jury held out until the last day & after the whole jury met with the judge they were finally pressured by the rest of the jury to agree to a not guilty verdict. The prosecutor from St. Paul  Mn. in this case is far more used to prosecuting individual drug & firearm cases &  i don't believe he was very motivated with this case.

Unless you are firing a 357 Magnum or something larger, a grown ass man with police training is not going to be unduly affected by the kick of a 45, and even less so with the much more common and much less powerful 9mm that most cops carry.

That said, 7 rounds at point blank range is not something you get from a "man in control" firing that many shots at a man no more than two feet away is the act of a man in panic mode, and yes he did needlessly endanger everyone involved, most likely including his own partner.

I honestly don't know if he absolutely belongs in prison, I am sure I wouldn't want him to be a cop in my neighborhood,  but we seem to have gotten off my original point, and the point of the article which is "Why is the NRA so conspicuously silent on this?"

I also don't think it was a 45.  As you noted, cops usually use 9mm or 40sw.

that was most likely the capacity of the magazine of a 9mm pistol.  I know that's the case with my Colt M1911.  In other words, cop emptied the magazine at the poor bastard.  The only surprise is that, from two feet away, two of the shots missed.  Then again, I have a story about some really piss-poor shooting by a couple of NYS Troopers but that's for another time.

S&W M&P, Glock 19 being the most common police gun. 1911's 7-8.  Cops generally aren't very good shots - they don't practice enough.

When I have the advantage of the facts, you were correct that the muzzle distance to Mr. Castiel was estimated @ 24 to 30 inches so how ells can we account for him only being hit by 5 rounds when the officer fired 7 times, officer Yanez's fear based quick draw took no time to steady & aim his firearm & I'm sure you know that a 45 cal. slug hitting a body anywhere in the torso has the power to disable the target. i have fired a 45 cal. automatic & even with target round's the gun moved my hands around & made it hard to hit the target when fired rapidly. Sorry I am unable to help with your N.R.A. question but I only know what I read about the organization.

The standard magazine for the Colt M1911 is 7 rounds.  I keep mine unloaded but have two full 7-round magazines close at hand.  Do try to put an 8th round into that standard magazine.  It will be fun to watch.

...further info.on the mfg. or the clip size of the firearm in question all I know from testimony is seven 45 cal. rounds were fired into the passenger compartment of the car five hitting Philando two in his hart.

My Colt commander has a 7 round clip

Don't know of any 9's other than the compact ones (Shield, LC9) that have 7 round clips.  Cops don't use those except maybe for back-up.

Yet another topic you don't know what you're talking about - and not man enough to admit it.

Now man up and go have a conversation with EuroTool, since you're on his level.

... with the exception of Willy Wonka.

The left always wants to portray pot smokers as anti gun. False narrative.

And why you blazing while carrying your legal piece? That doesn't justify being killed, but one little decision could have kept the two from ever crossing paths.

Regards to the law, the shooting is justified beyond a reasonable doubt. People don't have to agree with the law, just what the law is. Talk about alternative facts, well here is the sample example the LEFT ALWAYS demonstrates.

It's the only issue they sell to the people.

the NRA is making the right decision by not releasing a statement. Traditionally, as mentioned above, the NRA has been pro-LE, and law enforcement has been pro-NRA. I can see why the organization is reluctant to release a statement in favor of Philando Castile's actions because he was high on drugs and the jury did not convict the officer. Any statement would bring unnecessary publicity to an organization already under the microscope.

Good enough that I actually agree with it.

The more I think about it, the more I see how little the NRA would stand to gain from making a comment and how much they would have to lose by doing so and the negatives are huge, while there a very few positives that would come from their involvement.

I hate to say this, but if you are a national organization and you have to weigh the support of Law Enforcement against the support of "stoned black guys" I guess it's not much of a contest. lol

You also said that 7 was the capacity of a 9 - wrong again.  That ONLY is for subcompacts, not what cops use.

...the dash cam video from the shooting of Philando Castile if you go to the web site www.wcco.com  the CBS afilliate in Minneapolis you can see the actual shooting sequence & watch how the officers hands & arms move around with each shot, it's a wonder how his reckless shooting didn't hit any others in the car. I don't own a gun & my only experiance is with rental guns at the shooting range but when the kick back shows in the video that powerfully it's hard direct an accurate shot.
