Ukraine will now tell the Americans what THEY want, and then the real negotiations start.
In mediation practice, you first find out what each side is willing to take, and the negotiation is to get them to meet somewhere in between. All the US did with Russia is nail them down to a starting position before the negotiation begins. They will do the same with Ukraine. THEN and only then will negotiations begin to bring them together. Russia and Ukraine will both have to make some concessions from their starting positions, but once they have committed to a starting position, that is a baseline below which they can no longer go. Each side needs to be able to see at all times how far they are from the finish line. Only then will you get real concessions to make a deal.
