I agree on your Bernie point with a few possible exceptions:
1) He isn't mired in scandal at the time
2) He hasn't suffered another heart attack or similarly scary health issue
3) his hasn't crumbled in polling against Trump, compared to Mini, Biden or whomever is left from the mod side.
We also have to define "clear plurality". I would say if he is several hundred delegates in the lead, that would be enough. But if its 50 or 60, the Dem establishment could then say it was "essentially tied" and chose someone else. The popular vote and number of primaries won would also be a factor however.
The candidates can suggest who their 1rst ballot delegates should vote for on the second, but they are all free agents. (Actually they are free agents on the 1rst ballot as well, but typically expected to vote as allocated.)

I have no idea how delegates are assigned. I know for the actual presidential election, the parties pick a slate of electors. If the party wins in that state, those are the electors that get to vote. Even they are not bound to vote for the state winner (and throughout history a few have voted for someone else -- they are called faithless electors.)
Once it goes to the second ballot the delegates are free to vote for whoever they choose, or in the case of Bloomberg, who ever pays them the most. lol
There is no such guarantee that Crazy Bernie will get the nomination no matter how big his lead if he doesn't reach that magic number of 1,991 on the first ballot and he knows it, remember he was the ONLY person on the debate stage agreeing to nominate whoever the leading delegate winner ends up being. ALL the other candidates refused to make that pledge, and we all know why.
That for a brokered convention on the second ballot the delegates (plus super delegates who do not vote the first ballot just second and beyond if necessary) are free to vote for who they want, and no doubt mini will try to bribe most if not all of them.
However I think most are DNC lackeys who do not think for themselves will vote for who Perez/DNC orders them to vote for, and at that point in my opinion Bolshevik Bernie gets fucked.
