When are Democrats going to learn that “if you don’t vote for me, you’re racist!” doesn’t sway White voters, and instead pushes them away?
It’s hard to claim racism when Virginia voters just elected the MOST DIVERSE state wide slate in Virginia history. First black woman. First Latino. First immigrant.
If CRT was a lie, then Democrats will have to admit that McAuliffe did a terrible job countering it. When he insisted that CRT wasn’t taught in Virginia schools, that implied they were taught elsewhere. Then it turns out the state Board of Education features references to CRT influenced training on its website. McAuliffe’s credibility took another blow.
Then he makes a statement that sounds like “if you’re complaining about education and CRT, you’re racist”. Not winning over any voters on that tact.
In the closing days, McAuliffe seemed to cede the independent education vote to Youngkin and switched gears to getting his base out. So what does he do? Trot out NEA President Randi Weingarten, the national face of keeping schools closed forever. Another fumble with suburban voters concerned about education.
I will agree with Laffy that McAuliffe ran a terrible campaign. But I’ll disagree with him on CRT. If the Democrats think all they have to do is call CRT concerns racist and tell swing state parents they have nothing to worry about, they are in for some bad results in 2022.
