Nope, I really don't see a pattern here to justify profiling, do you?

So, to ensure we Americans never offend anyone, particularly fanatics intent on killing us, airport security screeners will no longer be allowed to profile certain people. They must conduct random searches of 80-year-old women, little kids, airline pilots with proper identification, secret agents who are members of the President's security detail, 85-year old Congressmen with metal hips, and Medal of Honor winning and former Governor Joe Foss, but leave Muslim Males between the ages 17 and 40 alone lest they be guilty of profiling.

As the writer of the award winning story "Forrest Gump " so aptly put it,

"Stupid is as stupid does."

But I'll bet a lot of those wearing rose colored glasses are having violent knee jerks.

and just leave it at extremists, and you can include Chuck Manson and Little Timmy McVeigh, too.  Those boys deserve at least an honorable mention.

Just fact-checking your first guy, it turns out that Sirhan was not in fact muslim.  He was a bunch of other religions, including Baptist, but not Muslim.   So much for facts, I guess.

SOOO - let's just make all the extremists wear hats with red flames, so we can spot 'em right away.   And we can get beanies with little floating feathers for the simple fucks.

include questions where the answer would be Tim McVeigh, Richard Reid, Basque Separatists, IRA members, John Walker Lindh, etc. Good job though picking and choosing incidents to prove your point. Maybe tomorrow I will make a list of white serial killers through the years and then you can try to tell me why all white males should not have their civil rights revoked.

Hey, I don't necessarily disagree with you, but given the relative ineptitude of these "screeners" [as well as probably most of the personnel in the "private" security industry in the USA] [do you really want to trust your safety to that sorry lot?] even if we restricted intrusive searches/procedures to that male Muslim demographic group, you still wouldn't be any safer than you are now.

But somehow, you might feel more emotionally gratified, and if that's an element constituting part of your "feeling of saety"  maybe it would be worth it.

As I've said before, once we accept the necessity/effectiveness of profiling for the purposes of combating int'l terror, we'll probably have to accept it for more mundane matters of domestic concern.

And eventually, both you amd me will be in some profiled grooup, somewhere, sometime.  It's inevitable.

So look before you leap.  But the jump MAY still be worth it.

the only way to fight terrorism is to define it as crime; to develop an international consensus that limits warfare e.g. to combatants; that equates bin Laden and McVeigh with Charles Manson.

If we fail to do that, we are undermining our own civilization.

Bush has already set us up to fail by portraying our adversaries as warriors, rather than criminals; by dealing with them as if we were at war with people who are not responsible for territories or populations, and cannot be pinned down.  He has approached this as an American war, instead of leading an international effort against crime.  Regardless of his reassurances to muslims, his approach legitimizes the terrorists, and sets one culture against another.

If we approached it as a matter of hunting down criminals, then we can negotiate with peaceful muslim leaders to develop what is legitimate and what is not - but Bush has chosen a PR battlefield that plays into the terrorists' hands.

Washington is full of smart people.  The RNC is not stupid - they're just focused on their power, not protecting our nation.  They don't have a sense of obligation to the nation that comes before their own perogatives.

on what a particular group is, not what an induhvidual does.

Good law enforcement catches the McVeighs and bin Ladens alike, and inevitably pisses some people off.   That a criminal has an ideology is only relevant to the pattern of danger, not to whether a given victim is more or less dead.

That proud is proud of his logic is illogical.  Logic strikes me as a tool, no more unusual than a screwdriver.  Why should a person be proud of their tools?  Unless maybe they never used them.

vs the annual damage caused by routine crime in the US.

My wild-eyed guess is that our own natives do us incredibly more harm that OBL could hope.  It's just that we take it for granted, and it's only got incidental entertainment value compared to OBL.

Women in prison, though, are a completely different issue.   They could be making movies that would more than pay back their cost to society.

As you indicate, Nicole, one can't be sure of catching all the 'Islamofascists', if you just go after only the dark skinned ones. To be sure, you have to be worried about white Muslims, short Muslims, female Muslims, child Muslims..indeed, the whole lot of them.

This paranoid scenario is straight out of that Twilight Zone episode: "The Monsters are Due on Maple Street". The upshot of this episode is that the true space aliens could defeat us without firing a shot...all they had to do was make us so afraid that we would turn on ourselves.

The IRA???  Timothy McVeigh????  We've got a worldwide group of fanatics trying to kill us (have you accepted that fact yet?) and your response is to not look out for them.  When a Japanese grandma or a blonde hair, blue eyed Finlandian flies a jet into a building or suicide bombs a marine base I will view them as a threat as well.  Until then, I think I'll stick with the Muslim male.

So were those terrorists they caught in England young Muslim males or were they Belgium housewives?

I won't go on and write tiresomely about it, but 10 seconds of thought gives me this:

Who bombed the Federal building in Oklahoma city?

1) Sirhan Sirhan
2) John Wayne Gacy
3) Batman
4) Timothy McVeigh and possibly White Supremists

Who killed 248 people in Great Britain between 1980 and 1998?

1) Bruce Lee
2) Emperor Hirohito
3) Wayne Gretsky
4) Dr. Harry Shipman

Stupider does worse than stupid does.  Depite our best efforts, not all Muslims are radicalized, yet.  We need to stay the course and keep up the good work.
