This is a question of "belief."  Many non-religious people have beliefs that are just as much a matter of faith as anything in the religious realm.  They just don't realize that.

Even if you "understand" it, that shows nothing about intellegence.  I learned to speak Russian fluently 30 years ago, am an expert in several areas of law, and have other accomplishments.  I will be the first to say that none of that makes me intelligent.  I just had some knowledge of a few fields. Saying God or god exists or doesn't is the same thing. Both are a matter of belief. Neither can be "proven," in the literal sense of the word.

In fact, the basis of religion is a recognition of the fact that it is a belief THAT CANNOT be proven.  That is why Catholics talk of the "leap of faith."  You can't prove it, but you believe it.  

The difference between the strident religious person and the striden athiest is that the religious person recognizes it is his believe.  The non-religious may not recognize that their position is equally unprovable and a matter of belief.

The invasion of Iraq was never about "stealing" Iraqi oil. It was about oil, but not about stealing anyones oil.

The freeflow of oil from the region is crucial to the worldwide economy, allowing a madman who had already invaded his neighbor to hold the world hostage was just not a viable option.
