...a thug cop who brutalized an innocent female photojournalist during the riots in Portland last August.  Despite the vicious attack, the brutal cop got off easy because he was only charged with fourth-degree misdemeanor assault.  

Very Disappointing! I make no bones that I am generally a supporter of the police since I believe they have a tough job. But this action is totally unacceptable. The job of the police is to protect the citizenry. If they feel a member of their force has been unfairly charged, they have the right to support that individual but to quit en masse is not the way to do it. And in my opinion these officers should not be re-hired if they later change their minds.

The 50 resigned from this quick response team under protest. Now they're back to their old positions.This special team was just recently put together and the cops were all volunteers to that unit.
Seems like this units was made up of "Hot Dogs" that felt they had "carte blanche" to run as they saw it.

I was incorrect with my post in that I now understand that these officers did not resign from the police force. Rather, they resigned from a voluntary crowd control unit. Still disappointing.
